Jenštejn – Castle, Hiking and Cycling

Jenštejn combines medieval architectural history with marked paths and three children’s cycling routes of different lengths. The focal point is the Jenštejn castle ruins, which today stand in the center of the municipality on a rocky promontory. There is also the “Vinoř–Jenštejn” educational trail, various cycling options and mini golf with a smartphone app for recording scores. This allows you to plan your stay around culture, a walk or a cycling trip.

A Castle with a Distinctive History

Jenštejn Castle is a cultural monument of medieval architecture. Its surviving landmark is a 22-meter-high round tower. The castle was first mentioned in written records in 1341. Its location alone makes the site distinctive: the Jenštejn castle ruins stand on a rocky promontory in the center of today’s municipality of Jenštejn.

Water Castle, Circular Moat and Gothic Chapel

Jenštejn Castle was built as a water castle. A pond protected it on the south side, while on the other sides it was protected by a circular moat carved into the rock. A well-preserved Gothic chapel is located on the second floor of the round tower. The site thus combines two different aspects of medieval architecture: protection by water and a moat, as well as a preserved sacred space. This gives the site several specific points of access to the history of the area – from medieval architecture and fortification to a preserved sacred space.

Educational Trail through the Vinořský potok Valley

The “Vinoř–Jenštejn” educational trail leads through the Vinořský potok valley, through Jenštejn and to Jenštejn Castle. It has five stations with environmental attractions, is just under 3 kilometers long and is marked throughout with red hiking signs. The five stations divide the route into thematic points, while the red markings identify its course as one continuous trail. Here, you can combine following a clearly marked route with insights into the environment along the way.

Three Children’s Cycling Routes with Different Profiles

Cycling also offers specific differences to choose from. The 4.6-kilometer “Dětská trasa – výuková” children’s cycling route is suitable for learning to ride a bicycle. The 8.2-kilometer “Dětská trasa – jednoduchá” route is mostly flat. The 11.2-kilometer “Dětská trasa – pokročilá” route runs approximately 70 percent along field and forest paths. The lengths and described route characteristics help you compare the options according to your preferred cycling focus. Mini Golf and Suitable Stay Planning
