Slustice – Church, Landscape and Footpaths

Sluštice combines a remarkable village church with an open landscape on the Pražská plošina. Visitors interested in cultural history can discover preserved paintings and traces of earlier construction phases here, while the field paths, forests and bodies of water provide a setting of their own for excursions.

Gothic church with Baroque and medieval traces

The church of “sv. Jakuba Většího” is at the centre of the village’s history. The single-nave Gothic church is surrounded by a cemetery wall with a gate. Inside, Baroque ceiling paintings and fragments of Gothic wall paintings have been preserved. This makes it possible to trace the development of the building through several historical layers: the originally Gothic church was completely rebuilt between 1746 and 1749, and only the masonry of the presbytery remains from the older building.

The combination of different construction phases defines the complex: the preserved presbytery points to the older core, while the 18th-century rebuilding and the paintings reveal further layers of the building. Those wishing to combine culture and local history will therefore encounter not just a single style here, but a complex shaped by several eras.

Landscape between fields, forests and bodies of water

Sluštice lies on the Pražská plošina at the boundary between the Středočeská pahorkatina and Česká tabule. The landscape is predominantly characterised by land used for agriculture. Smaller parts of the area are covered by the Babický les, Klánovický les and Říčanský les forests. Mlýnský rybník lies on the eastern edge of the settlement. It serves to store water and provide fire protection. The local waters also include the Výmola stream and two culverted sections of its tributaries.

Footpaths with history, culture and nature

For active exploration, the “Cesty, které nás spojují” route is particularly varied. It connects Sluštice with eight other municipalities via 27 km of restored field paths for pedestrians. Along the route, 44 signs provide information about the history, culture and natural features of the two regions. The signs distribute topics from history, culture and nature along the route. In this way, the path combines physical activity with subjects for pauses and observation. Depending on the level of difficulty, a suitable route length can be chosen; the footpaths are also suitable for the youngest excursionists. This allows a stay to be focused more strongly on exercise, discovery or shorter stages undertaken together.

Traditions and local settings

The traditional Sluštická pouť, which is combined with a breeding-animal exhibition and a football tournament, is part of the local experience. Another cultural reference is the former school building No. 53, known from Jiří Menzel’s film “Slavnosti sněženek”. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore weigh a cultural-history focus centred around the church against a stay focused on the landscape and footpaths. Sluštice is also connected to the Pražská integrovaná doprava transport system.
