Discover Podolanka: History, Chapels and Cycle Route

Podolanka between Valley History and Cultural Traces

Podolanka combines valley history, religious cultural monuments and a specific cycling connection. The name of the place was first mentioned in 1658 for an inn located in a valley near Jenštejn. The name is probably connected with the local landscape: a narrow valley through which a stream flows. Podolanka is therefore tangible to you not only through its present-day place name, but also through a landscape and a history that can be read in several locations.

Churches, Chapels and Memorials

The history of today’s municipality of Podolanka includes the history of the three formerly independent neighbouring municipalities of Cvrčovice, Kostomlátky and Podolanka. A particularly concrete testimony to this past is the listed church complex of the Beheading of St John the Baptist in Cvrčovice. It includes a Baroque entrance gate, a mortuary, an enclosing wall and several gravestones from the cemetery.

Distinctive memorials and wayside markers can also be found outside this complex. The Podolanka memorial to those who fell in the First World War commemorates seventeen citizens of the municipality and was unveiled on 29 May 1921. With 29 May 1921, the memorial has a clearly dated place in the history of the municipality of Podolanka and in the commemoration of its fallen. Two niche chapels built before 1680 also stand on State Road II/610 in Podolanka. They belong to the so-called Svatá cesta (VIA SANCTA) from Prague to Stará Boleslav.

Niche Chapel XXX is located on a road on the western side of Podolanka. Niche Chapel XXXII is situated on the Podolanka–Dřevčice road on the northern side, along the road towards Podolanka.
