Archaeological Traces Spanning Several Eras

St. Bartholomew's: Gothic Architectural History and Art

One particularly distinctive cultural monument is the Gothic Church of St. Bartholomew in Mochov. It was built in the second half of the 14th century on the site of an earlier chapel and has been documented as a parish church since 1352. For visitors interested in architectural history, both its period of construction and its long ecclesiastical use are therefore noteworthy points of reference.

The individual structural elements also tell of later changes. A Gothic chapel on the northern side of the presbytery, that is, the altar area, served as a sacristy at the beginning of the 20th century. Inside, the high altar dates from 1695. Its front, the antependium, is decorated with carved ornaments. The church thus brings together medieval architecture and Baroque-influenced furnishings.

Monument on Mochov Square

A Jan Hus monument by the artist Josef Škoda has stood on Mochov Square since 1928. The monument includes a memorial plaque for those who fell in both world wars. The square thus combines a striking work of the 20th century with an element explicitly dedicated to remembrance. The Na Hrázce Leisure Centre in Mochov is intended for sports, games, and relaxation. A precisely dated example of a local tradition was the “Pálení čarodějnic” festival scheduled for 30 April 2026. The programme included live music, children's Zumba, children's competitions, making witch slime, airbrush tattoos, a workshop for giant soap bubbles, food, and the lighting of a witches' bonfire. It is precisely this combination of history, shared activities, and local traditions that makes Mochov interesting for a variety of day-trip plans.
