Strančice: Culture, Garden Art and Local History

Chapel, Spring and Jewish Local History

The Chapel of St. Anne with its spring is located southeast of the centre of Strančice, towards the cemetery, in the Jedlovec forest. The listed complex comprises the chapel, the spring and the enclosed plots of the site. Two events are held around the spring every year: Slavnost otvírání studánky is celebrated on the last Saturday in May, while Slavnost uspávání studánky takes place on a Friday around 11 November. Both festivals are held in the vicinity of the spring by the Chapel of St. Anne.

West of the village square lies the complex of the former Jewish synagogue. It comprises the synagogue and the adjoining rabbi's house. The historic status of this site distinguishes it from the Chapel of St. Anne and makes it a separate point of interest if you would like to explore the town's history from different perspectives.

Garden Art and Modern Architecture

The garden of the Schnöbling Villa lies in the northeast of Strančice, on the southern slope of Hůrka Hill. The English landscape park covers 7.8 hectares and was designed by Otokar Fierlinger. It is considered an important example of garden architecture from the first half of the 20th century. Franz Schnöbling's villa was designed in 1929 in the style of late classical modernism by the Prague architect and builder Tomáš Šašek. Thus, both the design of the park and the architecture of the villa are central features of the same historic ensemble.

The Emil Kolben educational trail leads through twelve significant sites in Strančice and presents their history. Interactive quiz questions complement the route and give the exploration of the town a playful dimension. Emil Kolben was born in Strančice and is described as one of the most important founders of the electrical engineering industry in the Czech Republic. The educational trail connects this figure with several stops in the town without limiting the history to a single building.

Music, Workshops and Visual Arts Activities

Strančické záření is an annual, multigenerational open-air music festival held in Strančice near Prague, featuring several genres. The programme includes concerts, workshops and visual arts activities. For trip planning, this creates a different way to engage than at the historic sites: while the chapel, synagogue complex, villa and educational trail focus on history and design, the festival centres on shared cultural experiences.

Strančice railway station is located on regional railway line 221 between Prague and Benešov u Prahy. Nearby there is a public multi-storey car park or public parking area, as well as a bus stop for scheduled services.
