Tábor District: Hiking, Culture and Historic Railway

Between the Lužnice Valley and the historic railway

Tábor District combines impressive trails through the Lužnice Valley with an unusually vibrant railway history, castle ruins, pilgrimage sites and protected landscapes. This character is particularly tangible on the red-marked, 12.5 km hiking trail from Tábor to the ruins of Příběnice. The route begins in front of Tábor railway station and makes the town a logical search area for travellers who want to combine culture and activity during their stay.

Hiking with history and nature

The historic Tábor–Bechyně railway line was extended across the Duha Bridge to Bechyně in 1929. Even today, the railway uses a 1500 V direct-current system; the original M400 electric railcar is known as Elinka. This connection is also interesting when planning a day of hiking: the route through the Lužnice Valley can take hikers from Malšice back to Tábor by historic electrified railway.

Several destinations can be reached via marked trails. They lead to the pilgrimage church in Klokoty, the ruins of Kozí Hrádek, the Old Castle near Borotín and the Hýlačka lookout tower. Kozí Hrádek is associated with the emergence of the Hussite tradition in the region; Jan Hus also stayed there. From Sezimovo Ústí 2, a red-marked trail leads there in less than an hour. In Klokoty, you will find a national cultural monument that is also a destination for walks.

For quieter nature experiences, the educational trails and protected areas take centre stage. The Pintovka nature trail runs through the forest above the Lužnice Valley and has 30 stations with explanations. Borkovická blata was designated a nature reserve in 1980. The Nový rybník nature reserve is located near Soběslav. Svákov complements these landscape experiences with preserved ramparts of a prehistoric Slavic fortified settlement and the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Cave, water and regional excursions

Chýnov Cave offers a clear contrast to the outdoor trails: the visitor route is approximately 220 metres long, and temperatures are around 5 to 9°C. The cave was opened to the public in 1868 and is considered the first cave in the country opened to visitors. For families, this change between forest, viewpoints and a cooler underground destination can make the excursion varied without presupposing any additional features or services.

Swimming, as well as seasonal boat and pedal-boat rental, is possible at the Jordán Reservoir in Tábor. The water-based activities thus complement days of culture and hiking with a different form of leisure. The Toulava tourist area is associated with Tábor, Bechyně, Milevsko and Sedlčany and is described as a region with historical sights and preserved landscapes. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore weigh up a stay with Tábor as a starting point, excursions to individual cultural destinations and research focused more strongly on the landscape.
