Stádlec: Cultural Monuments and Hiking Routes along the Lužnice

Stádlec combines impressive cultural monuments with notable sites along the Lužnice. The Synagogue, Cultural Centre and Stádlec Castle

The building of the former Stádlec Synagogue was originally a Renaissance castle theatre and was converted into a district synagogue at the end of the 19th century. The former synagogue served as a synagogue until 1937. Today, the building houses a cultural centre and two apartments. At the same time, the former Stádlec Synagogue is a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its changing use makes the building a particularly vivid place where several periods of the town’s history can be traced.

South of the town lies the Jewish cemetery of Stádlec beside an unnamed stream that soon flows into the Oltyňský potok. Another historic site is Stádlec Castle, which is protected as a cultural monument. The castle is a single-storey, four-winged building arranged around a rectangular courtyard. It includes an extensive castle park, which is currently neglected. A walk through Stádlec therefore offers a changing sequence of sacred history, local architecture and a castle complex with a clearly recognisable structural layout.

The Stádlecký most on the Lužnice

A highlight for those interested in culture and hiking is the Stádlecký most. The fourth section of the “Stezka podél Lužnice” long-distance hiking trail leads in Stádlec to the oldest chain bridge in the Czech Republic. The bridge was reopened at its present location on the Lužnice on 25 May 1975. It is considered a unique technical monument and the last Empire-style bridge in the Czech Republic; it was also relocated from the Vltava to the Lužnice. The Stádlecký most is accessible to cyclists as well. The hiking trail leads to the bridge, and cyclists can reach it too, so you can choose between hiking and cycling. The routes differ in their connections with the towns and in their courses, but both lead to a place where technological history and the Lužnice come together.

After the Stádlecký most, the “Poloostrov mezi Lužnicí a Lužnicí” route leads through Stádlec, Křída and Dobronice. On the fourth section of the “Stezka podél Lužnice” long-distance hiking trail, the route continues after the bridge past the ruins of Dobronice Castle to Bechyně. The fourth section begins in Sezimovo Ústí; the long-distance trail continues to the confluence of the Lužnice and the Vltava near Týn nad Vltavou. The first route passes through several towns, while the second forms part of the long-distance trail.
