Historical Traces and a Special Setting for Your Visit

Rožmberský hrad was founded in the second half of the 14th century by Jindřich I. z Rožmberka. The reconstructed north wing of Rožmberský hrad houses the Soběslav City Library. Rožmberský hrad and the library can be visited free of charge during guided city tours in July and August, as well as during the library’s opening hours. This makes the visit closely connected with two different ways of discovering the city: a guided tour in the summer months or an independent visit during the library’s opening hours.

Renaissance, Exhibitions, and Church Art

Smrčkův dům is the only surviving Renaissance house in Soběslav. It contains the permanent exhibitions “Life in Blata and Kozácko” and “The Táborsko Landscape in Fine Art.” The first exhibition focuses on life in Blata and Kozácko, while the second explores the Táborsko landscape in fine art. The house also contains a memorial hall dedicated to the composer Otakar Ostrčil.

Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla was rebuilt between 1493 and 1517 in the style of Rožmberk Late Gothic. The 68-meter-high tower of Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla offers views of Soběslav and the surrounding landscape. Víta is an outstanding Gothic work from the time of Václav IV. Víta features stained-glass windows, a pictorial Stations of the Cross, and an organ that is still in working order. This allows you to experience different periods and forms of sacred architecture side by side while exploring the city’s cultural heritage.

On Foot Through the City and Countryside

If you would like to explore Soběslav on foot, the Soběslavské smyčky circular trail leads through the city and connects important architectural monuments with natural attractions. The route is approximately 13 km long and designed as a circular trail for pedestrians. Its approximate length gives you a clear sense of scale for planning an extended walk without limiting the route to a single sightseeing destination. Another perspective is offered by Rozhledna Svákov, which is accessible year-round free of charge. Many rare animal and plant species find a habitat in the Nový rybník Nature Monument. In this way, panoramic views and nature observation complement the historical themes with a scenic dimension.
