Tučapy – History, Landscape and Discoveries

Tučapy combines distinctive buildings, a varied local history and a scenic setting on the eastern edge of the municipality. Its historical traces range from the consecration of the Church of St. James the Greater in 1352 to the rebuilding of the synagogue after the fire of 1867. Tučapy Château and the Church of St. James the Greater

Tučapy Château stands out with three turrets with circular floor plans. The Church of St. James the Greater provides another important focal point: it was consecrated in 1352 and burned down in 1719. The church contains historic tombstones of the Dvořecký, Obytecký and Bloewenstein families. Members of these families were former owners of the fortress. Small Monuments and Traces of the Village

Individual historical landmarks are also scattered throughout Tučapy away from the château and church. The Chapel of St. Wenceslas stands opposite House No. 6 near the petrol station. A statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands on the village square by the bus stop. It bears the coats of arms of the Malovec and Obytecký families and dates from the late 18th century. A cross by the church marks the site of the former old cemetery. The village’s history also includes the brewery built in 1804 by Prosper Berchtold from Uherčice.

Jewish Heritage in Tučapy

Jewish heritage represents a distinct historical focus. The Jewish cemetery in Tučapy was probably established around 1713 on the southern bank of the Černovický potok at the western end of the southern Jewish quarter. The Tučapy synagogue was built in 1779 in the northern Jewish quarter and rebuilt after a fire in 1867. The former synagogue’s northwestern façade and entrance portal have survived; the portal is now bricked up.

Pond and Cycling Route

Rybník Pokoj pond lies on the eastern edge of Tučapy. With its safety overflow and the stream that drains it, it forms a valuable landscape-defining element of the municipality.
