Mažice – Village Green, Moorland and Educational Trails

Mažice combines a village heritage reserve declared in 1995 with a circular village green, moorlands and educational trails. The historic core is centred around a pond; on the edge of peatland, the village stretches between fields and meadows. This creates a destination where village history and protected wetland habitats come together on short and longer routes.

Village Green and Architectural History

The historic core of Mažice is a spacious, circular village green with a pond at its centre. The Chapel of Saint Anne, dating from the second half of the 19th century, stands beside the pond. A chapel with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1671 stands on a stone Baroque bridge. The bridge with its niche chapel is a protected historic monument. The granary next to House No. 5 is considered the oldest building in Mažice and is believed to date from 1613. It was one of the early buildings converted from an original wooden structure into a masonry building. The year 1853 is displayed on the gable of the smithy.

Historic Village Setting and Moorland

The historic village setting includes Mažická Stodola. It is a historic building and the last surviving part of the former so-called Mažický dvůr, House No. 16. The building contains spaces for leisure activities, recreational sports, and the municipality’s cultural and social events.

The Veselská blata nature monument also includes the cadastral area of Mažice. It protects a transitional bog within a basin mire, with characteristic flora and fauna, as well as flooded areas, wet meadows and wetland habitats. In the wider surroundings, the 6.5-kilometre Borkovická blata educational trail explores a protected peat bog with typical bog vegetation; most of the route runs along wooden boardwalks.

Educational Trails for Different Day Plans

The Mažice educational trail begins on the village green of Mažice, leads to the Veselská blata nature monument and returns via Zálší. The circular route offers 4.5-kilometre and 2-kilometre options. Six information panels provide facts about past and present village life in the Blata, local Blata architecture, traditional Blata dress and peat extraction; they also include activities for children.
