Rocky Landscape and Trails around Choustník

The Choustník Nature Reserve encompasses a rock city formed by ongoing weathering and surrounded by old-growth woodland. It was designated in 1949 and covers 9.9 hectares. The area also has a distinct geological profile: the rock consists of coarse-grained Choustník orthogneiss with conspicuous black tourmaline inclusions. These details make the landscape more than just a backdrop for a walk; they give it a distinctive character of its own.

A green-marked hiking trail runs along the edge of the nature reserve. The Choustnické Rocks can also be reached from the car park behind the village of Choustník by following the green-marked trail leading to the castle, which takes about 15 minutes on foot. This makes it possible to combine access to the rocks with directions to the castle without reducing the landscape to merely an intermediate stop. Choustník Castle and Views across the Region

Choustník Castle is an extensive ruin with massive walls and two square palace towers. One of the towers was converted into a lookout tower offering good views over the Soběslavsko and Táborsko regions. In this way, the castle complements the rocky landscape with a cultural and historical highlight and a special vantage point. The visit can be tailored to your own interests: the preserved walls and towers may take center stage, or the view over the two landscapes.

Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Choustník was originally Gothic and was founded in the 14th century. It was destroyed during the Hussite Wars and rebuilt between 1673 and 1687. Today, it is a single-nave church with a tower on the west side. For planning your visit, note that services are held at 11 a.m. on Sundays and on Wednesdays and Fridays; in winter, weekday Masses begin at 3:30 p.m.

The Medieval Festival at Choustník Castle on August 9, 2025, demonstrated how vividly the castle’s history can be presented. The event featured historical fencing, historical dance, falconry and craft demonstrations.
