Chýnov – Art, Churches and Landscape

Chýnov offers an unusual combination of church art, historic architecture, underground nature and landscape. Particularly distinctive are the Church of the Holy Trinity, the GHMP Bílek House, the Chýnovská jeskyně and the surrounding uplands. This allows you to combine cultural discoveries with nature-related activities and consciously choose the focus of your stay.

Art and Sacred History in Chýnov

Kostel Nejsvětější Trojice is a single-nave building that was converted in the Baroque style in 1670–79; the tower was added in 1727. The main altar features a painting of the Holy Trinity created by Jan Jiří Heinsch in 1712. The furnishings also include an Art Nouveau ensemble of stained-glass windows from 1928–31. With two exceptions, it depicts Czech national patron saints.

The permanent exhibition at the GHMP Bílek House mainly presents works connected with the house in Chýnov, most of which were created there in the late 1890s and the first decade of the 20th century. A further cultural highlight is the small South Bohemian classical music festival “Foersterův Chýnov”, which commemorates František Bílek and Josef Bohuslav Foerster. Its concerts take place mainly in the Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity in Chýnov or in the studio of František Bílek’s villa.

Technical and historical landmarks are also part of the character of the town. The Kamenný železniční viadukt in Chýnov is a technical monument approximately 30 m high and spans the Močítka valley and the Chýnovský potok stream. The range therefore extends from sacred art and sculpture to a striking structure from the history of transport.

Cave, Educational Trail and Landscape

The Chýnovská jeskyně offers a tour lasting approximately 45 minutes along a 260 m route. The Chýnovská naučná stezka educational trail provides a different form of orientation: its information panels provide insights into the history of the town, its most important sights and the surrounding nature. For your planning, this means that both a clearly defined cave experience and a thematic introduction to the town and its surroundings are available.

Near Chýnov lies the mountain (K Doubravě) [Radenín-Bítov]. The mountains Hora, Cetoraz [Cetoraz] and Vrchy are also located in the surrounding area. Svatá Anna is a church near Chýnov, while Svatý Jan lies in the wider region. These diverse landscape and cultural sites complement the more urban-focused themes of church, art and festival.
