Mladá Vožice: Castle History, Chapel and Hilly Landscape

Mladá Vožice combines striking reminders of the town’s history with trails and experiences for different types of holiday. Vožický zámek Castle was built between 1570 and 1603 and was remodeled into its present-day Baroque form under the Küenburgs. Historically old, carved gates stand out at the main entrance. The church dedicated to Saint Martin is also part of the town’s early history: it was already standing in 1348, when Mladá Vožice was first mentioned.

Historical Traces in the Townscape

One of the oldest structures in Mladá Vožice is the bell tower “Zvonice – solná věž”. The tower-like guard post was built on elevated ground in the centre; its ground floor housed a salt store. The Památník Mladovožicka offers another way to explore the region’s history. There you can see historical dishes made of tin, copper, porcelain, earthenware and glass. The institution is currently also dedicated to the historian and professor August Sedláček (1843–1926), who was born in Mladá Vožice, founded Czech local and family history studies, and created the work “Hrady, zámky a tvrze Království českého”.

The collection also includes works by the academic painter Ota Bubeníček (1871–1962), who lived and worked in Mladá Vožice. The art gallery displays paintings by Czech and European painters from the 17th to the 19th century. A group of four former Jewish houses has been preserved on Židovská Street. The remains of the Neo-Gothic synagogue, together with an adjoining house, form a residential building; a memorial plaque on it commemorates the victims of the Holocaust.

Chapel on Hrad Hill and Trails Through the Surrounding Area

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on Hrad Hill stands on the site of a royal castle that was completely destroyed in 1425 during the Hussite Wars. Around the middle of the 17th century, Krištof Karel Přehořovský z Kvasejovic commissioned its construction. A Stations of the Cross leads up the slope to the chapel. From the west, you can reach it via 32 stone steps. It is open every year during Advent, at Christmas, Easter and for the Vožice pilgrimage. From the “Na hradě” chapel, the view stretches across hilly landscapes and green valleys.

Those looking for an active experience will find the Mladá Vožice Via Ferrata on Pod Hradem Street. It is aimed at adventurous visitors and climbing beginners. The parking area at Náměstí obětí nacizmu is recommended; from there, the route leads via Majora Boháče and Pod Hradem streets to the ferrata in about ten minutes on foot.

Various routes are also available for further planning: On 15 May 2027, the 36-kilometre Mladovožická Route of the Praha–Prčice March is scheduled to start at the Mladá Vožice bus station. The “Stříbrná osmička” educational trail begins in Sudoměřice u Tábora at the railway station or in Mladá Vožice. The “Vítězství u Mladé Vožice” cycle route runs via Stará Vožice to Mladá Vožice. This allows you to focus your stay on local history, art, religious buildings, hiking or cycling.
