Rataje – Church, Archaeology and Rural Heritage

Rataje combines historical evidence with discoveries along the Smutná. The Church of the Holy Trinity, preserved remains of a medieval fortification and an archaeological trail give the village several distinctive features. In addition, there are rural farmsteads, houses in the style of South Bohemian farmhouse Baroque and opportunities to explore the surrounding area on foot or on the water.

Church and Historic Village Scenes

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Rataje is already mentioned in written sources from 1384. The present church was created through a Baroque reconstruction at the beginning of the 18th century. Inside, valuable spaces with preserved vaults, a cove ceiling and stone floors have been retained. A single building thus shows how older history and the Baroque transformation of the village come together.

The visible traces of the past also include the Valy ratajské. These are preserved remains of a medieval fortification. By the Smutná stands the former mill, built as a Neoclassical rural farmstead with a two-gabled layout dating from the late 18th century. On the lower side of the village green there is another rural farmstead with a log house and farm buildings, probably constructed in the first half of the 19th century. Rataje also has houses in the style of South Bohemian farmhouse Baroque. The different forms of architecture make the village interesting beyond its individual sights.

Archaeology on Both Banks of the Smutná

A particular focus is the Jan Karel Hraše archaeological trail. Its information panels provide details about the respective sites and Hraše's research. They also explain modern archaeology, research methods and the evaluation of research findings. The trail can be followed as a continuous excursion of approximately 15 km along both banks of the Smutná; below Haškovcova Lhota, the river is crossed.

The Na Homoli grove south of Rataje is also part of the area's archaeological history. It was there that the historian and writer Jan Karel Hraše discovered dozens of burial mounds. This site adds another specific link to the region's research history to the information provided by the trail.

Water, Music and Events

A paddling trip on the Smutná can begin at the bridge in Rataje. Dudák music by DUHA provides a different accent. Rataje also hosts cultural and social events every year, including Christmas carol singing in the chapel and a hunters' ball. The range of experiences thus extends from historic buildings and archaeological topics through the Smutná and the possible start of a paddling trip to DUHA dudák music and cultural and social events held every year.
