Libějice is considered a settlement of early medieval origin. The first written mention dates from 1379 and is associated with the so-called Rožmberk Urbar of 1379. The locality was formerly called Libějovice. The preserved urban structure and characteristic rural development are among the municipality’s greatest assets. On a walk, historical traces combine with the scale of a rural municipality.

A specific historic building is the bell tower in Libějice, which dates from 1872. Its bell was made in 1947 and restored as part of the reconstruction. Along the road from Libějice towards Malšice, there are also wayside crosses or small sacred shrines; in Czech, they are called “Boží muka”.

The Tábor–Bechyně railway line has been in operation since 1903 and was built and operated as the first railway in Central Europe to be electric from the outset.
