Balkova Lhota – Village History and Hiking Trails
Balkova Lhota Between Landscape and History
Balkova Lhota combines an agricultural setting with marked hiking opportunities and historical points of interest. Velký rybník is located nearby; its shore vegetation and the surrounding meadows shape the landscape there. Anyone looking for a place in the Czech Republic with village history, trails, and scenery will find concrete themes here for a stay.
Railway Station and Starting Point for Hikes
Balkova Lhota railway station is located on line 201 from Tábor to Ražice, which continues to Strakonice. The station building, or the passenger shelter at Balkova Lhota railway station, is accessible to people with disabilities. This makes the railway station not only a local orientation point but also a practical reference point for arriving visitors. At the same time, the hike “Na Borotín s K. H. Máchou” starts here, linking the railway line and the hiking opportunities at a specific starting point.
The History of Balkova Lhota
The first written mention of Balkova Lhota dates from 1523. At the same time, the village probably originated as early as the 14th century under the name Včelákova Lhota. A chapel stands on the village square. Thus, an early but only presumed origin, the year of the written mention, and a specific place in the village landscape come together. During a walk through Balkova Lhota, this makes it possible to connect the village’s history with today’s village square.
Fortress and Former Village Structure
The history also includes a small fortress mentioned in 1587, which had an upper floor made of wood. The former fortress has not survived. The building in which the enclosing walls of the original fortress had been preserved was demolished and replaced by a new structure. The complex at that time was protected by two ponds and a moat. The fortress therefore belongs to the history of the village, not to its surviving buildings.
Hiking Trails Through the Village and Region
Balkova Lhota also offers hikers several different options. The hike “Na Borotín s K. H. Máchou” starts at Balkova Lhota railway station and ends at Chotoviny railway station. In the wider regional area, it passes through Kostelec and Pikov and reaches the Starý zámek ruins. The fixed starting and ending points give the hiking day a clear structure, while the villages and the ruins extend the route beyond the immediate village area. In addition, a marked hiking route belonging to the Čertovo břemeno Greenways system passes through the Balkova Lhota area. The two hiking options have different focuses: the first route connects railway stations, several villages, and ruins; the second leads through the Balkova Lhota area.
Cycling and Enjoying the Landscape
For cycling plans, Route No. 1154 provides another regional connection; it runs from Jistebnice to Tábor. Those focusing on hiking or cycling can make their preferred activity the starting point when planning their stay.
