Tábor: History, Trails and Nature along the Lužnice

Tábor combines a distinctive historic setting with educational trails, hiking routes and nature experiences. Here you can discover underground history, a Gothic town hall, the Kotnov lookout tower and the Lužnice Valley Trail. The cultural profile is complemented by the pilgrimage church in Klokoty, ZOO Tábor and Pintovka Forest Park. Hussite History and Notable Buildings

The Husitské muzeum is located in the Old Town Hall building on Žižkovo náměstí. Its underground tour is approximately 500 metres long and includes five stations explaining how the cellars were used. The Gothic town hall is part of the same historical context: at 300 m², it is the second-largest Gothic hall of its kind in Czechia.

The 25-metre-high Kotnov Tower is accessible as a lookout tower and can be reached via 155 steps. The Klokoty pilgrimage church complex was founded around 1700 on the site of a former Gothic church; the church was completed in 1714. The complex is designated a national cultural monument. The current period is important for your planning: from 8 April 2026 to 31 December 2027, Klokoty will be closed to the public due to extensive reconstruction.

Educational Trails and Routes along the Lužnice

The Stříbrná educational trail runs along the Tábor–Horky–Větrovy route and explores the region’s long mining history. The trail is 3,500 m long, has eight stations and can be reached by MHD lines 30, 60 and 61. The Lužnice Valley Trail offers a different scale: it is 55 km long and divided into four day stages. The route leads through the deep valley of the Lužnice along the historic towns of Tábor and Bechyně.

The Křížem krážem Klokoty educational trail provides information on ten panels about the history and natural features of Klokoty, including the pre-Hussite history of the locality. It complements the historical impressions with a thematic look at the surrounding area.

Nature, Wildlife and Regional Discoveries

ZOO Tábor is home to almost 500 animals and its main mission is the protection of endangered animal species. It keeps 80 animal species, half of which are endangered. ZOO Tábor also operates a project to return the European bison to European nature reserves.

Pintovka Forest Park includes a forest fitness area with seven stations and a wildlife area. The Electric Railway of František Křižík, known as the “Elinka”, is part of the history of regional transport: regular service began in 1903. The Tábor Tourist Information Centre provides information about the city’s history, sights, interesting destinations in the surrounding area and opportunities for active recreation. Táborská setkání takes place in September, while Táborské Vánoce is associated with December.
