Žíšov: Folk Baroque, Brass Band Music and Nature

Žíšov combines village architecture, South Bohemian brass band music and protected nature in a compact destination. In the village square, you will encounter the architectural style known in South Bohemia as Folk Baroque. The combination of the village centre, chapel, music and floodplain landscape gives visitors several thematic points of interest, without Žíšov losing its village scale. Farmsteads stand around the square; the two remaining streets contain smaller agricultural buildings. The place is therefore not merely a name on the map, but a village with a clearly recognisable built structure.

Chapel and Musical Heritage

A notable historical detail is the chapel in Žíšov. Village judge Jan Šafránek had it built in 1837 on the site of a bell tower after the bell had been stolen there several times. The chapel was originally dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk; on 26 June 1907, it was consecrated to Saint Anne.

Žíšov is also associated with the musical heritage of Matěj Kubeš. He was born in Žíšov on 13 January 1892 and founded his own brass band, “Blaťácká kapela”. Over the course of his life, he composed around 300 pieces for small brass ensembles. The song “Okolo Žíšova” was performed for the first time in 1999 at a celebration organised by Kubešova Soběslav. The village square also hosts a celebration as part of an international brass band music festival held in South Bohemia on the third weekend of every July. The connection between the musician’s biography, his own band and the song performed adds a musical dimension to the architectural heritage.

Nature on the Lužnice

The Doubí u Žíšova natural area provides a distinct focus. The Nature Monument protects part of a natural acidophilous oak forest in the Lužnice floodplain. “Acidophilous” refers to a habitat that favours acidic conditions. The protected zone of the Nature Monument also contains wet floodplain meadows with temporary and permanent pools. Particularly protected animal and plant species are found there. For travel planning, this creates a clear contrast with the village architecture: here, the focus is not on buildings but on the floodplain landscape with its various habitats.

Cycling Route and Local Traditions

The GW Selského baroka cycling route runs from Veselí nad Lužnicí via Žíšov to Borkovice. In addition, the “Po stopách selského baroka” cycling tour is 24 kilometres long. For planning purposes, both the direction of the connection and the fixed distance of 24 kilometres are therefore important. Masopust, with its masked procession and stops at the village houses, is also part of the local tradition. This custom adds a communal element to the village traditions, as the masked procession and its stops involve the village houses.
