Historic Places with Their Own Stories

The former Jesuit monastery in Building A was constructed between 1717 and 1727 from a former stone fortress. The Baroque monastery gate, Markéta, is named after Saint Margaret; its gable features a fresco of the saint. The Church of Saint Francis Xavier was built between 1732 and 1735 on the site of an earlier church dating from the mid-17th century. Its high altar contains an image of the Black Madonna.

Guided tours of the interiors of the former Jesuit monastery include the cloister, the Baroque refectory, museum rooms and the church’s oratory rooms. Building A also houses a permanent exhibition of historical documents and objects relating to the history of psychiatry in Opařany. The sequence of rooms combines sacred architecture with museum exhibits and makes the tour varied without losing the historic character of the former monastery.

Park, Educational Trail and Paths

The DPN Opařany park is protected as a cultural monument and is open to the public daily from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. A dendrological educational trail leads through the park past labelled, rarer trees. This makes it possible to explore the park not only as a green space, but also through its documented tree species. The protected park thus showcases not only distinctive trees, but also how nature observation and heritage protection come together in one place.

The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk stands immediately next to the Church of Saint Wenceslas in Opařany and is itself protected as a cultural monument. The free-standing niche chapel is built of mixed masonry and has a square floor plan, a curved gable and a roof covered with double-laid tiles. Its square interior is vaulted with a ribbed cross vault. The architectural details can be read from different perspectives: outside, the gable and roof shape its appearance, while inside, the ribbed cross vault creates a distinctive accent of its own.

From Opařany, a paved forest path leads to Jezuitský vrch and the image of the Black Madonna. Jesuits once walked this path as they prepared for their work as preachers and missionaries at the monastery in Opařany. The paved forest path connects Opařany with a destination that also ties in with the religious history of the place.

The Opařany water tower was built in 1901. During guided tours held as part of European Heritage Days, it was viewed only from the outside and exclusively with a guide. This information is more important for your planning than a blanket assumption about access to the building.
