Roudná: Lužnice, Hiking Trails and Cultural History

The Lužnice flows through Roudná and shapes the character of the village. Water, the river landscape, and a green-marked hiking trail offer different ways to explore South Bohemia. During the summer months, Roudná attracts many holidaymakers and anglers. Those who want to combine experiences in nature with regional history will therefore find two clearly distinct focal points here.

River Landscape, Protected Area and Trails

In the European protected area “Lužnice a Nežárka,” the hermit beetle, weatherfish, thick-shelled river mussel, and Eurasian otter are among the protected species. The river and floodplain landscape is therefore a central focus alongside the watercourse itself. The green-marked hiking trail adds an opportunity to experience the surroundings on foot. When planning a trip, you can thus choose between a stay focused on water and landscape and an exploration with a stronger emphasis on cultural history.

The landscape also includes Autokemp Pohoda. It is situated in beautiful surroundings at a former sand quarry, near the Lužnice and about 10 km south of Tábor. Its location combines the proximity of the river with distinctive terrain shaped by its former use. Together with the hiking trail and protected area, this creates a setting where natural features and the history of the landscape stand side by side.

Cultural History in Janov

The cultural trail leads to Janov and the Church of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was built in 1712 and consecrated in 1716. It subsequently became the religious center of the surrounding communities of Roudná, Sedlečko, Myslkovice, Košice, and Doubí. A chapel dedicated to Mary Help of Christians is located near the church. Together, the church and chapel form a clear focal point of religious architectural history.

The cemetery in Janov is also part of the area’s history of remembrance. It contains the remains of an unidentified concentration camp prisoner. They were found in the winter of 1944/45 after a death transport had passed behind Roudná railway stop. This historic site represents a serious aspect of the region’s history and broadens the perspective beyond its religious buildings.

A large linden tree in front of house no. 15 in Janov is listed as a cultural monument. Pilgrimages have been held in Roudná since time immemorial and are said to have helped initiate the beginnings of permanent settlement. Thus, religious tradition, remembrance, and the history of the landscape meet in Roudná and Janov.
