Radětice: Viewpoint, Nature Park and Culture

Radětice combines traces of nature and culture with several distinct historic sites. In the surrounding area and in the village itself, you will find a viewpoint, woodland, religious buildings, archaeological evidence and memorial sites. They represent different facets of the locality’s history, from religious foundations and early medieval traces to commemorating local residents. This is why the landscape and the past are present here in several forms.

Woodland and Views over Bechyně

Plziny Nature Park partly extends across the cadastral area of Radětice u Bechyně. It is intended to preserve the landscape character of an extensive woodland complex with bodies of water as well as significant natural and aesthetic values. For you, this creates a broader landscape setting alongside the individual buildings in the village. The Radětice Observation Tower provides a clear viewpoint: its field of vision spans about 150 degrees and stretches from the northeast to the southeast. Bechyně in particular, as well as the surrounding municipalities and settlements, lie within this panorama.

Poušť: Chapel, Hermitage and Burial Mounds

The Poušť woodland also contributes significantly to Radětice’s historic character. In 1676, the devout Count Jan Norbert ze Štenberka had the Chapel of St John the Baptist and a hermitage built there on a rocky elevation. Since 1980, the Evangelical Methodist Church has held Christian educational courses in the chapel complex; the site is also used by the church for recreational purposes.

In the Poušť woodland, 14 surviving Slavic burial mounds are arranged in two rows. A total of 14 to 16 burial mounds there are considered to date from the early Middle Ages. Thus, sacred history and archaeological traces meet in the same landscape, without the two subjects becoming part of a single building.

Chapels and Memorial Sites in Radětice

The Kaplička-zvonice chapel and belfry in Radětice was built in 1921 and is 11.80 metres high. Its original interior painting, the pictorial decoration with four images of saints and the altar were restored in 2002. Another testimony to the locality’s history is the Radětice war memorial. It bears the names of 30 Radětice residents who fell in the First World War. Both sites reveal different aspects of the local past: the religious character of the village and the commemoration of its residents.

Another distinctive feature is the semicircular Chapel of St Mary. The farmer Jan Kožíšek had it built in 1857. Today, it stands in Radětice on the main road towards Bechyně, is privately owned and was renovated in 1997 at the municipality’s expense. The combination of its construction date, location and ownership gives this small building a clearly identifiable history of its own.
