Sviny: Farmsteads, Chapel and Moorland
Accommodation in Sviny
Sviny combines rural architecture with a spacious village square and a Late Baroque chapel. Elaborately decorated gables define several Blata farmsteads; further afield, paths lead through moorland. This brings local history together with practical opportunities for walking, cycling and inline skating. The Borkovická blata Nature Reserve in the surrounding area also draws attention to a transition bog with characteristic flora and fauna.
Village Character and Architectural History
The Chapel of St. Vojtěch is a protected cultural monument and a freestanding, octagonal, masonry central building with a polygonal bell dome and lantern. Its core dates from the Late Baroque period in the late 18th century; its present form took shape after an extension in 1896. Inside is a Baroque statue of Our Lady of Sorrows. The progression from the Late Baroque core to the 19th-century extension gives the chapel a clearly defined architectural history.
Svinenská náves also shapes the village’s character. The large, spacious square is circular in layout and includes two ponds as well as green spaces with lime and birch trees. A monument to the fallen of the First World War stands in the southern part, which is lined with lime trees. Several imposing Blata farmsteads with richly decorated gables are associated with the South Bohemian Baroque tradition. The granary at house No. 7 is one of the individually protected monuments in Sviny. The historic municipal school building was also built in 1795.
The local craft scene includes Keramika U Kočků, whose ceramic products are decorated by hand using underglaze painting. Further afield, the plague cemetery of Kerchůvek lies between Sviny and Kundratice. It was restored in 2008 along with its chapel and upgraded for tourism.
Moorland in the Surrounding Area
The Borkovická blata Nature Reserve protects a transition bog in a basin with remnants of bog pine forests and characteristic flora and fauna. Wetlands are regenerating in areas where peat has been cut; these include protected plant and animal species and habitats of European importance. An educational trail runs through the reserve’s moorland. Check trail conditions before your visit if you plan to follow it.
Walking, Cycling and Other Activities
There are several options for active days: a walk from Sviny leads over the dams of the Dorotka and Holý ponds, and the Greenway selského baroka cycle route passes through the village. Inline skaters can travel from Sviny toward Borkovice, Dolní Bukovsko and Veselí nad Lužnicí on well-maintained, less busy roads. Road conditions can change, so check them before setting out. Recreational and sport fishing is possible at Cihelna Pond; check the current fishing conditions and permit requirements in advance. The multipurpose sports complex, renovated in 2026, can serve visitors to the municipality and offer a wider range of physical activities.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Interests
When looking for a hotel, it helps to distinguish between the village itself and its surroundings: the chapel, village square and farmsteads are the cultural highlights right in Sviny, while the moorland and educational trail lie further afield. If you are mainly interested in architectural history, focus your search on Sviny; if nature trails and moorland matter more, include the surrounding area in your plans.
