From Medieval Fortification to Castle

Radenín Castle originated as a medieval fortress. In 1578, the fortress was expanded into a castle, which became the centre of the estate. The castle took on its present form in 1869. This sequence makes the transformation from fortification to castle complex clear and distinguishes its various construction phases.

The castle is a two-winged, two-storey building. One wing features pilasters and semi-columns; a lunette moulding runs along the second upper floor. The ground floor has Renaissance cross and net-rib vaults, as well as barrel vaults with lunettes. Parts of the 14th-century fortification walls and a later eastern gate have been preserved in the former castle grounds. The castle courtyard also has a well and terraces.

Garden Spaces with Distinctive Features

Radenín Castle Park is a romantic terraced park laid out in the 19th century on a Baroque foundation. It slopes down from the castle across five terraces; its features include a viewpoint, a brick grotto and the surviving remains of an orangery. The older design foundation and the later form of the park stand side by side, while the terraces structure the grounds.

A different type of garden can be found in Hroby, a place within the same municipality: it has a terraced ornamental garden with a Neoclassical belvedere, which is fully accessible; other areas of the castle grounds, however, have restricted access. Access to other areas of the castle grounds is restricted. The garden and the rest of the grounds therefore have different access conditions.

Churches and Jewish Heritage

The Church of St. Margaret is single-naved; its choir has a five-sided end, and the tower stands on the north side. Renaissance features include a cross vault from the second half of the 16th century and a façade also dating from the 16th century. St. Margaret has been documented as a parish church since 1369 or 1384. The church is near a Gothic medieval fortress. It is Gothic in its core and is occasionally used for services. If you would like to attend a service, check the schedule locally.

The Baroque octagonal Chapel of St. Barbara is located on the south side of the church. It was built with a dome in 1732 and features Baroque paintings.

Radenín’s historical heritage includes the former Jewish ghetto and the Jewish cemetery. The cemetery has been reconstructed and is well maintained; around 300 gravestones remain. A 2021 description states that it is open to the public. Check current access conditions before visiting.
