Mlýny – Church, Křemenný val and avenues

Mlýny combines village history with distinctive landscape features. The village lies in the valley of the Černovický potok, providing a starting point for explorations in which a medieval church, a protected geological area, avenues and waterside paths reveal different aspects of the destination.

Geology and landscape around Mlýny

On the eastern edge of Mlýny lies the protected geological area of Křemenný val. It is the 80-metre-long and 6-metre-high remnant of a fissure in gneiss rock filled with quartz. Its precise form and geological origin make the site a distinctive natural feature for visitors who want to learn about not only classic attractions but also the character of the landscape during their trip.

East of Mlýny, near Mrázkův mlýn, lies Mrázkova alej, an avenue of 150 oak trees. It has been proposed as a registered significant landscape element; this status describes planned or proposed protection, not a completed registration. A beautiful oak avenue leads to Mrázkův mlýn and complements the landscape character of this area.

St. Catherine: a historic focal point

The single-nave, originally Gothic Church of St. Catherine in Mlýny dates from the mid-14th century. Original Gothic tracery has been preserved in three windows. The church was first mentioned in 1379. Two later changes are also important for its historical classification: in 1402, the filial Church of St. Catherine was separated from the church in Choustník and elevated to a parish church. In 1609, it was thoroughly renovated and its tower was rebuilt.

The building history thus extends from the first mention through its elevation to a parish church to the renovation of 1609, offering several historical points of reference for a visit to the church. A stately commemorative lime tree stands in front of the church cemetery entrance. Together with the preserved tracery and the long building history, it makes the church grounds a place where architecture, local history and a visible landscape feature come together.

Mill, cycling connection and possible focuses

About one kilometre upstream on the Černovický potok lies the well-preserved mill at “Vařečků”, which serves as a recreational site. From Mlýny, a paved cycling connection also leads around Strážiště hill, with a telecommunications transmitter, to Psárov. The paved surface provides a concrete point of reference for route planning. Those who include the route around Strážiště and onward to Psárov are planning a different form of exploration than visitors whose stay focuses on the church, mill or avenue.
