Discover the Olomouc District
The Olomouc District between nature, history and active days
The Olomouc District offers an unusually wide range of ways to tailor your stay to your own interests: you can visit caves of archaeological significance, walk through a large arboretum, explore castles and fortifications, or combine active excursions. This mix is also appealing for families, as impressive discoveries, exercise and more leisurely sightseeing can be combined into different daily itineraries.
An informative way to experience the landscape is the Luhy Litovelského Pomoraví educational cycle trail. It begins in Horka nad Moravou and runs for 17 km along paved forest paths. Underground, the Javoříčko Caves await, with almost 800 m of publicly accessible passages and dripstone halls. The Mladeč Caves are also an important archaeological and paleontological site: prehistoric human and animal bones as well as stone tools were found there. The Bílá Lhota Arboretum offers a completely different landscape experience. It covers almost three hectares and features hundreds of tree species, Japanese maples, alpine plants and aquatic plants.
Varied experiences for your daily itinerary
If you would like to combine different activities during your holiday, Park sportu Hrubá Voda offers a wide choice: the complex includes a bobsleigh run, a treetop trail, horse-riding activities, disc golf, mini golf, archery and an underground slate-mining labyrinth. Fun park Hlubočky has a 1,536 m-long track, archery and other activities. In winter, the offering also includes three ski slopes, a ski school, and a toboggan and bobsleigh run. Another specific destination is Sportovní areál Sobáčov on the Litovel–Bouzov cycle route. It offers sport fishing, a restaurant, camping cabins, beach volleyball and an outdoor smokehouse.
Sluňákov in Horka nad Moravou combines an open-air gallery with a natural area that serves as an introduction to Litovelské Pomoraví; most of the area is freely accessible. At Svatý Kopeček, Veverák rope park offers 47 obstacles on three courses. Těšíkovská kyselka is a prominent starting point for hikes on the edge of the Nízký Jeseník: the spring is documented as an iron-rich mineral spring, and its surroundings serve as the starting point for hiking routes.
Castles, museums and Olomouc as an urban focal point
Bouzov Castle is furnished with paintings, works of art, historic furniture and specially made fixtures. During ceremonial occasions, visitors can also see two functioning drawbridges and a portcullis there. At Fort XVII in Křelov, a permanent exhibition presents the history of Olomouc’s fortifications; the site also includes a military collection. The Hanácké Museum in Příkazy preserves a well-maintained complex of Haná clay buildings with orchards, three traditional barns and a replica.
At Svatý Kopeček, the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is the focal point of a traditional pilgrimage site. The Svatokopecké Museum is dedicated to the history and present of this pilgrimage site. Nearby, the seven-kilometre educational trail through the forests of Svatý Kopeček offers another view of the surroundings; it begins near Olomouc Zoo. The zoo itself features extensive seawater aquariums with sharks, piranhas and coral fish. From its observation tower, you can see across Olomouc and a considerable part of Moravia.
Olomouc is particularly relevant when choosing accommodation if you would like to make use of rail and urban transport. The city is an important railway junction; the main station is located near the city centre. Express trains, InterCity, EuroCity and regional trains operate there. The local transport network is mainly served by trams and buses.
