Želechovice: Village History, Cycling Routes and Water Landscape

Želechovice combines village history, a flat landscape and regional events with distinctive traces of the past. The history of the village ranges from prehistoric settlement and iron smelting in the 8th century to the Neo-Gothic chapel and the museum established in 2014.

Village History and Cultural Traces

The Vesnické muzeum Želechovice is an organizational unit of the municipality of Želechovice and was established in 2014. The majority of its exhibits come directly from Želechovice. The focus is therefore not on a general collection, but on the history of the village. The museum was officially opened to the public for the first time on 5 July 2014. This date adds a specific chapter of the village’s more recent history to its older historical traces.

The Chapel of Sts. Cyril and Methodius is also part of the village’s history. It belongs to the Uničov parish. The present Neo-Gothic chapel was built between 1893 and 1895. Želechovice is also associated with the archaeological discovery of an ironworks dating from the 8th century. North of the present-day village, archaeologists discovered 24 Great Moravian iron-smelting furnaces. Archaeological finds also provide evidence of prehistoric settlement in the surroundings of Želechovice. Another historical detail is Farmstead No. 8, which is listed in the state register of cultural monuments.

Water Landscape and Cycling

A distinct feature of the landscape was created by flooding a former sand-mining area near Želechovice. The resulting body of water serves as a biocorridor for waterbirds. The natural setting can be combined with a cycling trip: Cycle Route No. 511 runs over one of the preserved pond dams. The flat terrain around Želechovice is particularly suitable for cycle tourism. The flat terrain also provides a setting for cycling days without steep climbs. Dozens of linden trees shade the village square in Želechovice and create another distinctive local landmark. Those travelling along the cycle route thereby combine a clearly described route with the open water and pond landscape. This provides a different way of experiencing the village than the historical sites, while still allowing both to be combined as part of a trip.

Events Throughout the Year

Regular events in Želechovice include the Hody pod lipami festival on 5 July. In winter, a Christmas concert is also held in the local chapel. A clear seasonal contrast emerges between the summer festival under the linden trees and the winter concert. In this way, historical themes, the landscape and local events cater to different travel interests, without reducing the village to just one attraction.
