Blatec: Village Center, Cycling Routes and Wine Events

Blatec combines a historically shaped village center with cycling routes, river landscapes and events revolving around wine. Historic Village Center and Chapel of St. Margaret

The medieval and modern-era village center of Blatec is recorded as an archaeological find area in category UAN II within the built-up area. The original layout of the village can also still be traced: Blatec was laid out around a rectangular village square, from which two exits led east and west. The historic structure can still be recognized in aerial photographs today.

One of the distinctive buildings is the Chapel of St. Margaret. It was first mentioned in 1804 and is probably older. The chapel is a single-nave, plastered solid masonry building with a hipped roof covered with beaver-tail tiles. A prismatic tower with a pyramidal roof rises through its western façade. This gives the village center a clearly recognizable architectural detail for a cultural-history walk.

Cycling Routes Between Rivers and a Protected Area

Blatec lies between the Morava to the east and the Blata to the west; the Romza stream also flows through the village. Along the Morava, the Morava–Chropyňský luh Natura 2000 site is located within the Blatec landscape area. These geographical features give the surroundings a distinctly water-oriented character, without requiring you to commit to just one type of excursion.

For orientation by bicycle, Cycling Route 6061 and Route 4, the Moravská stezka, are relevant. Both routes run along cycle lanes or local farm tracks. In addition, four bus services between Olomouc and Tovačov pass through Blatec in both directions. When planning your trip, you can therefore weigh up whether to focus on cycling routes, local history or a connection with the cities of Olomouc and Tovačov.

Mill, Statue and Distinctive Local Details

Beyond the Morava, Blatecký mlýn is located on the Morávka millrace. The mill was built in 1773 and adds a building closely connected with the river landscape to the local history. The statue of St. Linhart stands immediately behind Blatec on the left side of the road in the direction of Újezdec. Both destinations broaden the view beyond the village center itself.

Cycling Events and Wine Tradition

Blatec is also associated with the “Královstvím na kole” cycling event. At one edition, more than 100 cyclists took part. At another edition, the start in Blatec was at the football field. The two details show different aspects of the events: one the size of the participation, the other the specific starting location in the village.

The Blatecké vinobraní wine festival reached its third edition in 2025. At the 2025 Blatecké vinobraní, more than ten selected wine varieties were served and presented with explanations of the individual wines and their stories. The second Blatecké vinobraní took place on September 14, 2024, in the hall of the municipal building and offered twelve wines from the cellars of Čevelovice.
