Litovel: History, Brewery and the Nečíz

Litovel combines urban history, regional craft traditions and a distinctive water landscape. The Nečíz is one of six branches of the Morava River that flow through Litovel. In addition, there are walking routes through the historic center, museums with very different focuses and a tour of the Litovel Brewery. If you would like to combine culture, short discovery routes and regional characteristics during your stay, the town offers several clearly distinct points of interest for this purpose.

Routes through Litovel and its urban history

The “Historie a příroda Litovle a okolí” educational trail is a 3.5-kilometer, easy walking route. All three circular routes begin and end within Litovel’s built-up urban area. This allows you to choose between several route options without being tied to a single circular trail for orientation. The “Historická Litovel” circular route traces the town’s history since its foundation in the 13th century and leads to architecturally noteworthy buildings in the historic center.

Historic Center and Museums

A prominent landmark is Litovel Town Hall. It is already mentioned in a surviving parchment document from 1287 and was remodeled several times in the Late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. During the redesign of Přemysl-Otakar Square in 2014, an 8.5-meter-long and 7-meter-wide stone bridge over the Nečíz, with its preserved paving, was uncovered. Its origins are probably presumed to date to the transition from the 14th to the 15th century.

The Litovel Museum is housed in the original building of a shooting range from the 19th century. The permanent exhibition “Litovelská řemesla 1. poloviny 20. století” presents local crafts from the first half of the 20th century and is continuously expanded and modified with new interesting objects. The Muzeum harmonik offers a completely different perspective: It contains around 330 accordions from nearly 40 Czech and foreign manufacturers. Some instruments are more than 150 years old; you can try out the sound of selected accordions or heligons yourself.

Brewery Tradition and Regional Character

The tour of the Litovel Brewery presents the traditional production of Litovel beers. It takes you through the brewhouse and storage cellars as well as the brewery museum, and ends with a beer tasting. The brewery has been growing together with the Haná region for more than 130 years. In this way, the brewery’s history complements the town’s historical themes with an insight into a regional tradition that continues to shape the area to this day.
