Discover Újezd: Church, Cycling Routes and Village Traditions
Újezd combines a long church history with cycling routes, a river floodplain and long-standing village traditions. Several perspectives come together here for planning your trip: you can view historical landmarks in the village, explore the routes of various cycling paths and discover events organized by local clubs, organizations and educational institutions.
Church and Monuments in Újezd
The Church of Saint John the Baptist is documented as early as 1296 under the patronage of the Lords of Šternberk. A new Church of Saint John the Baptist was built in 1585; its uncovered tower has survived to this day. Újezd therefore offers two important reference points in the village’s history, making different construction phases visible.
Several religious monuments also form part of the historic village landscape. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in Újezd was designated a protected cultural monument in May 1958. The Marian column is dated to 1859. At the center stands the Immaculata statue at the intersection of the main road between Uničov and Šternberk and a local road leading to the church. This location provides clear orientation within the village without combining the individual structures into a single complex.
Cycling Routes and the Teplička Landscape
Cycling Route 511 passes through Újezd. Its route runs from Litovel via Červenka, Dětřichov, Želechovice, Brníčko, Paseka, Sovinec, Křížov and Stránské to Rýmařov. In addition, Sections 1, 2, 2A and 3 of the Šternberk–Uničov pedestrian and cycling path lie within the cadastral area of Újezd u Uničova. The third stage between Mladějovice and Újezd was built in 2023. This allows you to consider different routes and sections separately when planning your trip.
The Teplička river floodplain, which stretches through Haukovice and Újezd, provides a further landscape attraction. Together with the designated cycling-route sections, it also makes the area interesting for a trip in which you want to experience local history and the landscape not exclusively through sights, but via different routes.
Traditions and Events
Újezd’s cultural life includes village festivals organized by local clubs and organizations. The traditional switching-on of the Christmas tree includes fireworks, punch, Christmas carol singing, small stalls and performances by pupils from the primary school and kindergartens. The Spolek František association also traditionally organizes a meeting of devils with Saint Nicholas and an angel in the parish garden. These events present Újezd as a place where history, community life and recurring village events stand side by side.
