Přerov District: Castles, River Landscapes and Family Trails

Přerov District combines impressive castles, river landscapes and protected nature with trails suitable for a variety of family outings. This combination is particularly vivid at Helfštýn: four courtyards of the castle are open to visitors, and steel walkways lead through all levels of the palace to a viewing platform overlooking the Moravian Gate valley.

Castles, museums and special collections

The cellars of the Helfštýn palace contain five rooms with exhibits of artistic metalwork from a collection of more than 1,300 pieces. This means that, in addition to its architecture, the castle offers a clear thematic focus. In Tovačov, the château presents the estate's owners, its architectural history and important historical figures. Tovačov is also located near the confluence of the Morava and Bečva rivers.

The château in Hustopeče nad Bečvou can also be explored in many ways: a visit includes a courtyard, a lapidarium, an art gallery and museums dedicated to butchery, film and cookers. At Přerov Château, the permanent exhibitions of the Comenius Museum cover almost 1,200 square metres. This allows you to vary the cultural focus of your stay rather than limiting yourself to a single attraction.

Trails along the Bečva and through Přerov

For active days, the Bečva Cycle Path is an important reference point. It connects Hustopeče nad Bečvou, Hranice, Lipník nad Bečvou, Přerov and Tovačov. The route is intended for cyclists and pedestrians; where the surface allows, skaters can also use it. The Valašské Meziříčí–Přerov section can be reached by train. During transport, bicycles can travel as luggage or in the storage area.

In Přerov, a shortened educational trail runs for approximately 5 kilometres and includes 11 stops. It is suitable for families with small children. Another 5-kilometre route leads from the château grounds to the banks of the Bečva and the lagoon park; it can be completed with a pram or bicycle. You can reach the Hranice Abyss on foot from Teplice nad Bečvou railway station via an educational trail, or from the campsite in Hranice by following the red tourist trail markings.

Floodplain forests, birds and protected landscape

Nature experiences are not limited to the trails. Near the centre of Přerov, you can observe waterfowl year-round at the confluence of the Strhanec and Bečva rivers. In the Žebračka National Nature Reserve, 139 bird species have been recorded, including 79 breeding species. Michalov Park is designated as a cultural monument and a protected landscape feature; its early-20th-century garden architecture stands alongside flowers of the floodplain landscape. ORNIS is located near Michalov Park and the Žebračka National Nature Reserve.

A wooden observation point above a small, gradually silting-up body of water offers views of birds, amphibians, invertebrates, aquatic plants and typical floodplain trees.
