Potštát: Castle, Rocks and History

Potštát is a destination where urban history meets a striking rocky landscape. The castle, the historic town centre, the exhibition on the history of the region and the rocks of Potštátské skalní město offer different ways to explore the area. Castle and historic town centre

Potštát Castle stands at the end of a flat spur of land built up by the town. It developed from a regularly laid-out Gothic fortress. The major conversion into a castle took place at the beginning of the 17th century. In the historic town centre, the townscape is bordered, among other things, by the Church of Saint Bartholomew.

Rocky landscape and castle ruins

Potštátské skalní město provides a different landscape highlight. The rock walls consist of resistant sedimentary rocks from the Carboniferous period and are over 20 metres high. From Potštát, you can reach them along the Velička stream. In the steep slopes, visitors can see the several-centuries-old Puchart Castle ruins. The ruins preserve the foundations, wall remains, as well as a moat and rampart of a double castle.

Regional history on site

The exhibition on the history of the Potštátsko region presents the history of Potštátsko, including its local districts and the villages that disappeared within the Libavá military training area. The History of the Potštátsko Region exhibition has been open since April 2014. It thus complements the individual architectural and landscape sites with a regional-historical perspective.

Cycling and horse-riding routes

There are also clearly distinguishable routes for active travel plans. The Potštát–Boškov cycle path connects the cycle paths from Hranice with the cycle path towards Středolesí and Uhřínov. The Hipostezka na Potštátsku horse-riding trail passes through Potštát, is 31 kilometres long in total and offers two circular routes. These connect horse farms, resting places and tethering points for horses.

A cultural monument in Lipná

The wooden Church of Saint John the Baptist in the Lipná district of Potštát is listed as a cultural monument. It is the last surviving building of its kind in the Oderské vrchy area. The church acquired its present appearance through a reconstruction in 1746.
