Olšovec brings together visible local history and a special destination nearby: on the village square, the bell tower and sandstone cross tell of different chapters in the village’s past, while nearby Lom Olšovec offers a different kind of stay. In the village, you’ll encounter tangible traces of the past; at the flooded former quarry, clear water and stony shores shape the scene. Which of these aspects interests you most may influence your choice of destination and accommodation.

Village Square and Local History

The village square is home to the bell tower and a sandstone cross, funded by a community collection in 1909. It stands on the site of an earlier wooden cross. Inside the bell tower, Augustin Humplík placed a fragment of the original wooden cross. Two distinct keepsakes therefore meet in the same square: the stone cross outdoors and the preserved cross fragment in the tower.

The tower bell also has a storied history. During the Protectorate, it was confiscated, taken as far as Prague and later returned. The bell-ringing tradition is associated with the Kozelský family of house number 12 and the year 1818. The tower’s facade was repaired at municipal expense in 1999; the doors were replaced in 2011.

Another monument commemorates T. G. Masaryk: the sculptor Sosna created the bust, which was unveiled on 7 March 1930. Sosna was a student of the Olomouc sculptor Pelikán. The date of its creation and this artistic connection give the monument its own place in local history.

Culture and Events in Olšovec

Leisure competitions take place at the “Rybníček” cultural and sports complex. In summer, the complex is used for dances and discos. Its offerings therefore include both sports competitions and seasonal events. If you’re interested in community cultural life, Rybníček offers a different perspective on Olšovec alongside the historical landmarks on the village square.

The children’s instrumental ensemble Olšoveček is part of the village’s musical history. Teacher Jan Kujal founded it in 1993. As early as 1994, the ensemble recorded its first concert for Česká televize Brno. These early dates add a more recent cultural thread to the village’s history.

Nearby Lom Olšovec

The flooded former quarry Lom Olšovec is located near the village and is a popular spot for swimming. The water is clear, and the quarry is approximately twelve metres deep. The banks are relatively steep and made up of large stones. Some of these lie just below the water’s surface at the edge, and there is limited space for sunbathing. The site is therefore not suited to a spacious waterside sunbathing area; instead, its character is shaped by the former quarry and its stony shoreline.

Swimming is at your own risk. If you’re planning a visit for a swim, check local conditions beforehand. The approximate depth and hidden stones along the shore are practical details to consider when deciding whether to take this trip. This makes it easier to distinguish the village’s cultural focus from the swimming destination nearby.

Choose Accommodation Based on Its Location

Camping House Boňkov is a small campsite in Boňkov, in the valley of the Velička stream between Hranice and Potštát. It is therefore in the municipality, not within the settlement of Olšovec. If you’re specifically looking for a hotel or other accommodation in Olšovec, check the exact location stated in any specific listing. Being in the municipality and being in the village are two different things.

This also makes it clear when planning which of the experiences described are directly connected with Olšovec and which are associated with the surrounding area or the municipality.
