Osek nad Bečvou on the Bečva

Historic roads and village character

From the earliest times, the royal road “královská (strata regia)” from Vienna to the north ran through Osek nad Bečvou. The historic village character developed on both sides of this former royal road. The church, cemetery and school stand on the spacious village square formed in this way. The historic trade route passing through the village was also known as the Roman Amber Road and was used by merchants travelling north to the amber deposits.

Church, archaeological finds and chapels

The archaeological traces also span several periods: a Slavic settlement with predominantly Slavic pottery from the 8th and 9th centuries was identified in the cadastral territory. Fragments of Linear Pottery culture and Urnfield culture pottery have also been found. The “Kostel Povýšení sv. Kříže” church stands in the village centre; it is a High Baroque church on Gothic foundations with a cemetery. It was built between 1783 and 1791. The local cultural heritage also includes the ensemble “Socha sv. Tadeáše a socha sv. Jana Nepomuckého”, a local Baroque sculpture dating from 1748.

The “Kaple sv. Vendelína” chapel stands on a ridge. Passers-by can ring the bell there, made by the Tomášková–Dytrychová bell foundry.
