Radkova Lhota between Water, Forest and Fields

Radkova Lhota brings water, history and rural landscapes together within a small area. The village lies on the right bank of the Radkovy or Blazický potok. In a sugar beet-growing region, Radkova Lhota was also once known for its fruit growing. The riverbank, fields and traces of earlier land use are an integral part of the village’s history here.

A distinctive landscape feature is the body of water created in 2000. It covers one hectare; at the dam, the water is 5 metres deep. The development of the forest park can also be traced through specific years: in 2001, additional areas covering 0.75 hectares were planted; in 2003, another pond was created and the forest expanded. In 2004, two field paths were repaired, 130 fruit trees were planted and two field copses were established.

Nearby lies Dřevohostický les, a 310-hectare European protected area within the Natura 2000 network. The forest lies between Dřevohostice, Radkova Lhota, Bezuchov and Hradčany. A 7-kilometre educational trail runs through this area. Alongside the open fields, this gives you access to a distinctly different landscape, whose protected-area status forms part of the local setting.

Smaller historic features also deserve attention. At the road entrance to Radkova Lhota from Radkov stands a wayside shrine dating from the 18th century. At house number 15, a bell tower was built in the village in 1929 to replace an older bell tower. At the former Na Větřáku site, fruit trees and a well still stand today in the middle of the fields. The site points to an earlier settlement or land-use landscape, without implying that any present-day buildings remain there.

Radkova Lhota Chateau is located on the former isolated farmstead of Lhotsko. It was a hunting and recreational château with an extensive park and was converted into a special-purpose facility, a retirement home. In the historical context of the region, Radkova Lhota remained part of the Dřevohostice estate until 1635. House number 18 is also associated with the 1905 fire that destroyed a windmill belonging to the Lhotsko estate. The mill stood on the hilltop to the left of the road from Lhota to the Lhotsko estate.

For active exploration, equestrian activities take centre stage. The Jezdecký klub Radkova Lhota is active in Radkova Lhota. The Moštěnka bridleway follows a field path along an avenue of plum trees to Radkova Lhota. Its red-marked main route ends behind the village at the racecourse of JK Radkova Lhota, where there is a refreshment stop. If you would like to combine different interests during one stay, this allows you to distinguish between village history, woodland landscape and the riding route, rather than treating all the impressions as the same experience.

Recurring customs and events are also part of the local annual cycle. The Vodění medvěda tradition was observed on 10 February 2024 and 1 March 2025. Events for Mikuláš and the lighting of the Christmas tree took place on 7 December 2024 and 5 December 2025.
