Renaissance, the Sound of Bells and Moravian History

Dřevohostice brings together impressive Renaissance architecture, Baroque art and vivid local history in a compact area. At its centre is the four-winged Renaissance water castle. It was built on the site of a water fortress that already stood there before 1368 and is considered one of the most important monuments of the Moravian Renaissance. The castle is therefore not merely a single photo opportunity, but a tangible gateway to the history of the town.

In the outer bailey, valuable Baroque statues stand on tall plinths on both sides of the upper gate: they depict Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint John Sarkander. The outer bailey is also home to a fire brigade museum. The information centre at the castle offers tours of the castle and fire brigade museum and provides tourist maps and brochures. Those exploring Dřevohostice with children or as part of a mixed travel group can thus combine historic architecture with a museum devoted to a different theme.

A Bell Tower with a History of Its Own

The Renaissance Fraternity Bell Tower is part of Dřevohostice’s historic character. The five-storey building is 25 metres high; its present form dates from 1581. The bell tower also houses the “Maria” bell from 1721, which weighs 685 kilograms.

Another remarkable work can be found in Novosady: in front of house no. 359 stands a statue of Saint Roch, a folk-style Baroque sculpture from the second half of the 18th century. Together with the statues at the castle gate, it broadens the view beyond the castle to individual historic works of art throughout the town.

A Nature Trail and Cycling Route for Active Days

The Dřevohostickým lesem nature trail presents the natural and historical features of the forest north of Dřevohostice. It complements the architectural and artistic monuments with a landscape perspective: the forest is perceived not merely as its surroundings, but as a place with its own natural-history and historical themes.

The Záhorská Cycling Route also passes through Dřevohostice. It is approximately 39 kilometres long, follows paved surfaces and includes some climbs. The Záhorská Cycling Route is more suitable for trekking bikes. When planning an active day, this makes the key differences from a short town walk clear: the route is longer, not completely flat and intended for a specific type of bicycle.

The Dřevohostice burial ground and the Dřevohostice-type jug are well known to archaeologists. Alongside its visible monuments, these references give the town an additional historical dimension.
