City History around the Main Square

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the city’s most significant historic building. It is located near Kojetín’s main square on the Olomouc–Kroměříž road, which runs through the city centre. One of the city’s oldest buildings is the former synagogue of Kojetín, built in the middle of the 15th century. Both buildings provide historical points of interest for a tour of the city centre.

The Kojetín City Museum preserves evidence of the permanent settlement of the present-day city area since the Palaeolithic. Its collections also include examples of folk art, traditional costumes and folk ceramics, an extensive numismatic collection and a significant collection of old printed works. A visit can be combined with a detour to the VIC Gallery and the museum’s permanent exhibition; admission to both is free.

For school and children’s groups, the City Museum offers tours led by information or museum staff, as well as accompanying programmes available by prior arrangement. Groups comprise a minimum of three and a maximum of 20 people. The maximum number is 10 people when visiting the Hrůzostrašné sklepení.

Kojetín Biocentrum and Paths by the Water

The Naučná stezka Biocentrum Kojetín educational trail runs around the Na Hrázi pond and across part of the Biocentrum via a footbridge. Part of the Kojetín Biocentrum consists of artificially created ponds and channels that support water-dependent animals. The educational trail is suitable for children, families with children, schools, seniors and tourists, as well as for people with prams and wheelchair users.

This gives Kojetín, alongside its historical attractions, a clear focus on nature and walking. The Kojetín swimming pool complex complements this area with pools, a water slide, a Kamikaze slide, a whirlpool and other water attractions.

Traditions and Events

Kojetínské hody has been celebrated every year since 1999 in mid-August as a three-day event with a traditionally varied programme. March is traditionally dedicated to amateur theatre in Kojetín; this is when the regional qualifying showcase of amateur theatre groups, Divadelní Kojetín, takes place. These dates create different focal points throughout the year: in August, a local tradition is at the centre, while in March, the focus is on regional amateur theatre.
