Landscape between Meadows and Oak-Hornbeam Forests

The Dřevohostický les area also includes the cadastral territory of Radkovy. It covers 310 hectares and includes extensively mown meadows ranging from the lowlands to the foothills, as well as oak-hornbeam forests. This natural area is home to species-rich Carpathian oak-hornbeam forests, including Hacquetia epipactis and Symphytum tuberosum. Open meadows and wooded sections thus shape two different sides of the landscape, which you can take into account when planning your days in and around Radkovy.

Village History and Local Monuments

The Chapel of Saint Dominic in Radkovy was built in 1872. Its bell was hidden during the First World War to prevent its confiscation by the Austrian authorities. The still-existing Radkovy mill also dates back a long way: it is first mentioned in 1412. The historical character of the village is complemented by a settlement structure considered valuable from an urban-planning perspective. Radkovy has been preserved as a linear village with a widened village square.

Several crosses and statues of saints are among the local monuments. These include the stone cross from 1865 beside the Chapel of Saint Dominic, the statue of Saint Joseph from 1948 beside the municipal office building on the village square, the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1900 beside road III/43724, and the statue of the Virgin Mary from 1921 on the field path leading towards Bystřice pod Hostýnem. The fields around Radkovy and Radkova Lhota also tell stories of earlier times: archaeological finds indicate that farming communities were already living there around the 5th millennium BC; finds from the La Tène culture have also been discovered.

Cycling, an Educational Trail, and Village Traditions

Cycling in Radkovy takes place on a network of field and forest paths. The Dřevohostickým lesem educational trail is also located nearby. Twelve information panels cover the natural and social conditions of the landscape. The educational trail also includes orientation exercises with azimuth directions and maps. The experience therefore focuses not only on being on the move, but also on consciously engaging with the terrain and landscape. Radkovy’s village festivals and events also include bear leading, a special local tradition.
