Lipník nad Bečvou – Heritage Reserve, City Walls and Bečva Landscape

Lipník nad Bečvou combines a historic town centre with the landscapes along the Bečva. The urban heritage reserve was designated in 1989 and includes around 190 houses as well as smaller, predominantly sacred buildings. 105 buildings within the reserve are designated immovable cultural monuments. This gives the town a clear cultural focus, complemented by nature experiences and cycle paths for varied travel planning.

Historical Highlights in the Town Centre

The remains of the town fortifications are among the best-preserved city walls in Moravia. They are visible around the entire historic town centre and give orientation through Lipník nad Bečvou a distinctive theme. The bell tower also holds a special place: it is the only one in Moravia to have been preserved in its original late Renaissance form. If you would like to visit the tower between 1 May and 30 September, this is possible exclusively as part of a guided city tour.

Other distinctive testimonies to the town’s history date from different periods. Johann Gregor Mendel attended the Piarist school in Lipník nad Bečvou in 1833–1834. To this day, the Piarist College preserves its 18th-century layout with two courtyards and a monumental façade. When it was created, the rooftop garden complex was the first rooftop garden complex north of the Alps. The clock mechanism in Lipník nad Bečvou is another highlight and is considered a rare technical monument.

The Bečva Cycle Path runs through Lipník nad Bečvou along the Valašské Meziříčí–Hranice–Lipník nad Bečvou–Přerov–Tovačov route. Between Hranice and Přerov, it includes a 26-kilometre section without motorised traffic.
