Litoměřice District: Rivers, Vineyards and Historic Places

Litoměřice District is a region for trips that combine river landscapes, wine-growing, historic places and trails through the volcanic České středohoří. The district lies in the central Polabí region at the confluence of the Labe and Ohře rivers.

Rivers, vineyards and volcanic heights

The Porta Bohemica forms a striking Elbe gorge within the district’s landscape. Vineyards line the Labe from Litoměřice through Žalhostice to Velké Žernoseky. The volcanic České středohoří is known for its panoramic views and shapes the character of many landscape experiences. Milešovka is the highest mountain in the České středohoří and offers distant views across the uplands and the Polabská nížina towards the ridge of the Krušné hory.

The area around Doksany also offers its own perspective on the landscape: here, the meanders of the Ohře and the landscape of the Dolní Poohří are part of the scenery, as are views of the most important peaks of the České středohoří. Open river spaces and distinctive heights therefore stand side by side, without requiring you to limit yourself to just one type of excursion.

Cycling routes, hiking destinations and water

The Labská magistrála is the district’s main cycling corridor along the Labe. Its route passes through Velké Žernoseky, Žalhostice and Litoměřice. The Golden Trail connects Úštěk, the area around Třebušín, Kalich, Panna, Litýš, Kamýk and Velké Žernoseky. For a hike, a trail leads from Mnetěš to the summit of Říp. From the Lukovsko junction, a yellow-marked trail also leads to the Opičí hlava sandstone formation.

Towns, fortresses and castles

Litoměřice, Terezín and Úštěk contain urban heritage reserves or heritage zones. Terezín adds a fortress to this cultural profile; founded in 1780, it is considered an example of European bastion fortification. The fortress includes several dozen kilometres of underground mine tunnels, which visitors can still see.

Doksany Monastery was founded in 1144–1145 as a Premonstratensian convent with a Romanesque basilica. Ploskovice Chateau was built as an early 18th-century summer residence and later became the residence of Ferdinand V. At Házmburk, the accessible White Tower offers a panoramic view from the castle ruins. In Litoměřice, the information centre can arrange guided city tours as well as visits to the Kalich lookout tower and the underground exhibition “Důl Richard v proměnách času”.

The district is accessible by road, rail and the Labe corridor. When searching for a hotel or other accommodation, you can therefore first decide which part of the travel experience should be the focus: the historic urban areas of Litoměřice, Terezín or Úštěk, the vineyards along the Labe, the trails of the České středohoří or Lake Žernosecké.
