Kleneč – Natural Monument, Sand Pink and Village History

Kleneč is a village with an unusual natural heritage profile. In the Kleneč National Nature Monument, the Bohemian Sand Pink (Dianthus arenarius subsp. bohemicus) occurs naturally only here in the entire world. A protected natural area

Kleneč is designated as a National Nature Monument. The Kleneč National Nature Monument protects continental sand grasslands, sandy grassland areas, dry lowland and upland heathlands, as well as an acidic oak forest on sand. It is also home to other rare plants and invertebrates associated with sandy soils. The different habitats give the nature monument a diverse natural structure. Open sand grasslands and sandy grassland areas contrast with dry heathlands and the acidic oak forest on sand. Those interested in plants and smaller animal species can therefore explore the site through several habitat types and place the Bohemian Sand Pink in this broader context. The Bohemian Sand Pink is protected and must not be picked. The Karfilát slopes east of Kleneč are also designated as a National Nature Monument. The village also includes two smaller ponds.

The location helps explain the village’s special features: Kleneč lies west of Říp Mountain and south of Roudnice nad Labem along the Čepel stream. The village buildings lie on both sides of the stream along the district road to Roudnice. Kleneč includes two outlying mills: Lagroun in the north and Lorencův in the south. The two smaller ponds also belong to the village, while Lagroun and Lorencův are outlying mills located in the north and south respectively.

Village History and Events

Kleneč has been mentioned in written records since around 1530. A monument to those who fell and died in the war was erected in the middle of the village square in 1923. Thus, natural heritage themes and visible historical references complement each other in the village landscape.

The Kleneč National Nature Monument is designated as a destination for cycling and tourism. Events also provide insight into village life: the Myslivecký ples is held annually in Kleneč. On January 27, 2024, SDH Kleneč organized Masopust, and on October 27, 2024, the traditional Strašidlácký pochod event took place. The Poslední leč in Kleneč, which is open to the public, maintains hunting traditions such as a hunting court and ceremonial appointments as hunter and gamekeeper.
