Budyně nad Ohří combines a medieval water castle, distinctive sacred buildings, a protected two-arch sandstone bridge and an educational trail along the Malá Ohře. Water Castle and Unusual Collections

Vodní hrad Budyně nad Ohří is a medieval water castle. It houses the Janda Museum. The museum features an alchemical workshop and a laboratory in rooms where alchemical experiments were conducted in the 16th century. During a visit to the museum, you will also follow a sightseeing route through the castle's interiors. At Vodní hrad, you can also see a preserved Nile crocodile that was brought to the Budyně estate at the beginning of the 16th century.

Another special feature is the lapidarium. It is a permanent outdoor exhibition of the Budyně nad Ohří City Gallery and presents a collection of stone sculptures that belong to the cultural heritage of Budyně nad Ohří. Outdoors, you can view historical artefacts there. Thus, alongside a museum visit, an open-air exhibition is also available.

Sacred Buildings and Town History

The restored synagogue in Budyně nad Ohří now serves as a cultural centre for exhibitions, lectures and concerts. The building was constructed in 1786–1787 in the Rococo style with Neoclassical elements, after the previous synagogue was destroyed in a major fire in 1783. The St Wenceslas Church is medieval in origin and a distinctive building on the main square. Its western façade is decorated with sculptures, and it also has a massive square tower.

The Church of Our Lady of the Snows complex includes a Baroque ossuary chapel. The church itself is a distinctive sacred building and a prominent landmark in the landscape. A protected two-arch sandstone bridge in Budyně nad Ohří was built in 1770–1773 and complements the historic buildings with a testament to the history of transport.

Educational Trail and Cycle Route

The Naučná stezka Malá Ohře is an approximately 3-kilometre-long educational trail with six information boards. It follows the Malá Ohře to its confluence with the Ohře and to the place known as Špička. Along the way, it introduces visitors to the natural beauty, history and present-day character of the Budyňsko area. Cycle Route 6 runs between Kostelec nad Ohří and Doksany via Budyně nad Ohří, offering another way to include the town in a route plan.

An Event with a Long Tradition

Budyňský poutník is a recurring folk music event held on the grounds of Vodní hrad Budyně nad Ohří. The traditional pilgrimage in Budyně, associated with Budyňský poutník, dates back to the 16th century. The castle grounds therefore bring together historical traditions and a contemporary cultural event.
