Velemín between Milešovka and the České středohoří

Velemín lies in a picturesque valley below the summit of Milešovka and serves as a gateway to the landscape of the České středohoří. The entire area around Velemín lies within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area, which has more than 500 km of marked hiking trails. This means that the town combines landscape, activity and culture in a way that allows you to plan a variety of day trips: you can explore marked trails, seek out viewpoints or discover historic sites.

Hiking Trails and Distinctive Landscapes

A green-marked hiking trail runs around Milešovský rybník, connecting Velemín and Milešov and making it suitable for hikes and cycling trips. The approximately 6 km-long Opárenské Valley stretches from Velemín to Malé Žernoseky. One possible access route to the ruins of Oparno Castle leads from Velemín along a green-marked hiking trail through this valley.

The Boreč educational trail begins in the village of Režný Újezd below the chapel and includes nine stops and two viewpoints. Boreč is also a place where you can observe a unique natural phenomenon: the ventaroles are particularly visible in winter. A 19 m-high observation tower on Milešovka offers views of the surrounding landscape.

Part of Milešovka is designated as a national nature reserve. It protects forest ecosystems on the slopes of the distinctive trachyte cone, as well as rock and scree communities. In addition to its viewpoints, the landscape therefore also offers a natural-history dimension.

Castles and Baroque Cultural Monuments

The ruins of Oparno Castle lie north of the village of Oparno in the cadastral area of the municipality of Velemín. Milešov is home to the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua, a Baroque sacred building dating from 1669–1680. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and belongs to Velemín in the Ústecký Region.

Milešov is also home to the restored Calvary Chapel, which has been preserved as a protected cultural monument. The Milešov château park also contains a gloriette, a Baroque garden pavilion. It was built between 1701 and 1708 by the then château owner Jan Leopold Hrzán z Harasova with Italian master builders.

The 553 m-high Ostrý mountain is of volcanic origin and lies between Milešov, Velemín, Kocourov and Březno. The ruins of Ostrý Castle are located on its summit, while its slopes are covered with mixed forest. In this way, the surroundings of Velemín combine natural formations, castle ruins and Baroque buildings into a range of themed excursions.

Transport links are also worth considering: Velemín is easily accessible thanks to its proximity to the D8 motorway. The D8 connects Prague with Ústí nad Labem and Germany.
