Újezd between forests and history

Újezd combines a forested landscape with an unusually rich history. The village lies amid the forests of the Brocenská pahorkatina, which belongs to the Dokeská pahorkatina. The discovery therefore begins not with a single attraction, but with a landscape area where nature, historical traces, and regional agriculture stand closely alongside one another. A prominent landmark is Újezdský Špičák. At 348 m, it is the highest peak of Štětsko. In addition, a basalt quarry at Újezdský Špičák was exhausted at the end of the 19th century. The mountain thus represents a topographical feature, a former opportunity for viewing the landscape, and the use of regional raw materials at the same time. The peak is part of the present-day landscape, while the observation tower and quarry bear witness to former uses.

The protected areas also give Újezd a clear connection with nature. The Kokořínsko Natura 2000 site overlaps with the Kokořínsko - Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area. The Kokořínsko Natura 2000 site also includes the cadastral area of Újezd u Chcebuze.

Local history with notable turning points

The first written mentions of Újezd date from 1230 to 1253. Initially, Újezd was owned by the Vyšehrad Chapter; from 1519, the village belonged to Snědovice. A momentous event occurred in 1860: a fire destroyed twelve typical farmsteads in Újezd.

Agriculture and regional character

Agriculture is also part of Újezd’s history. In the 19th century, high-quality red hops were grown here. Historically, there were numerous orchards around Újezd. Both details add an agricultural dimension to the picture of the village: alongside forests and peaks, cultivated areas and orchards shaped the regional identity. Hop growing and orchards thus point to two different forms of agricultural use.
