Aussig: Volcanic Landscapes, Castles and Cycle Routes

Those who choose Aussig for their trip will find striking contrasts in the Ústecký kraj region: volcanic cones rising above fertile fields, historic paths through sandstone landscapes, views of the Elbe, and a strong spa and cultural tradition. For your planning, therefore, it is not just a single excursion that matters. First consider whether you would like to combine hiking, cycling, history, wine or relaxation.

Volcanic Cones and Wide-Ranging Views

The Central Bohemian Uplands have volcanic origins. Basalt cones rise from fertile fields, while castles stand above vineyards. In the Milešov section of the protected landscape area, dramatic cone-shaped mountains, individual ridges, scree fields and exposed rocks define the scenery. At 837 metres, Milešovka is the highest peak in this section and offers a 360-degree panorama across the region. Lovoš opens up views over the Elbe. The České středohoří area reaches its lowest point at the Elbe in Děčín, at 122 metres above sea level.

Historic Paths Through Rocks and Forests

There is a network of marked hiking trails in Bohemian Switzerland National Park. The markings follow the systems of the Czech Tourist Club or the park administration. The historic long-distance Ridge Trail connects Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland with the Ore Mountains. Its section through the sandstone landscape passes Rudolf’s Rock and the viewpoints at Belveder; at the same time, rugged rocks and deep forests are part of its character.

Another route is the trail through the Land of Castles. It leads to the ruins of Házmburk and includes the viewpoint at the rugged Vrabinec Castle, overlooking the Elbe. The Libochovice–Házmburk hike is 5 km each way, takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours at a leisurely pace, and is considered moderately difficult. Clear regulations apply to cycling, horse riding and climbing in the national park: bicycles and horses are restricted to roads, local roads and designated routes, while climbing is permitted only at certain places and times.

Cycling Between the Elbe and the Ore Mountains

The Elbe Cycle Route runs for 96 km within the Ústecký kraj region. Around Ústí nad Labem, an approximately 25 km section follows the principles of safe cycling. The route passes through Žernoseky, where you can taste wine. Another transregional connection is the Ploučnice Cycle Route, which runs through the Ústecký kraj region, connects the Ústí and Liberec regions, and forms part of Czech long-distance cycle route 15. It mainly uses paved or otherwise hardened surfaces; a racing bike is not recommended for it.

The region's more challenging cycling options include routes through the Bohemian garnet area, the Milešov Highlands and the Ore Mountains. They extend as far as the Ore Mountains Museum in Lesná and the Mědník Mining Gallery. When searching for accommodation, you can therefore use your preferred focus as the first criterion: a riverside route, a hiking landscape, castles and cultural attractions, or a stay with a spa tradition.

Spa Towns, Monuments and Regional Traditions

The regional heritage administration of the NPÚ manages castles, châteaux and religious monuments, including Házmburk, Jezeří, Libochovice, Ploskovice, Stekník and Velké Březno. Jezeří is a Baroque monument in the Ore Mountains and offers views of the surrounding landscape. Teplice is one of Central Europe's oldest spa towns and is associated with the meeting of Goethe and Beethoven. Other spa towns include Lázně Mšené and Klášterec nad Ohří. In the Žatec and Saaz cultural landscape, traditional hop fields and buildings for drying, packaging, certifying and storing hops are part of the regional character.
