Garnets and History in Podsedice

Podsedice are mentioned in marginal notes to the founding charter of the Litoměřice Chapter, which historians date to 1057 or 1058. Another historical trace leads to the Podsedice fortress, first mentioned in 1549. Both references give the town a clear historical connection without requiring you to limit yourself to a single era.

The history of Bohemian garnets is particularly distinctive. In 1770, a manorial “garnet factory” for cutting and further refining Bohemian garnets was established in Podsedice. The historic “garnet factory” also included the production of jewellery, which was sold domestically and exported abroad. Landscape of the Central Bohemian Uplands

Podsedice lies at the southeastern foothills of the Central Bohemian Uplands. The northern part of the Podsedice area lies within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. The “Švestková dráha” railway line runs through the Podsedice area and provides connections to regional centres such as Litoměřice and Most. The surrounding area also has the marked “Cyklotrasy Českého granátu” cycle-route network, with routes 3118, 3119 and 25A between Lovosice, Třebívlice and Libochovice.

A short cycling loop of the “Cyklotrasy Českého granátu” begins in Třebenice. It follows Route 25A below Košťálov to Teplá and continues to Vlastislav. There, you will find the Skalka castle ruins and a chateau. The route thus combines physical activity with several cultural points of interest, without requiring you to consider the different themes separately.

Castle Ruins, a Museum and a Wine Experience

Near Podsedice, you will find the ruins of Košťálov Castle on the summit of a 481.5-metre-high basalt hill near Třebenice. Also nearby, in the chateau park of Třebívlice, there is a pavilion housing the Ulrika von Levetzow Museum. The ruins of Oltářík Castle (Hrádek) rise above the Děkovka district and add another striking historical site to the selection.
