Dolánky nad Ohří on the Ohře

Dolánky nad Ohří lies in a hollow on the banks of the Ohře, about 5 km south of Terezín. Its location on the river gives the village a clear landscape connection, while historic buildings, wayside shrines and chapels shape its cultural character. Church, Bell Tower and Historic Monuments

The Church of St. Giles is at the center of the village’s history. It was originally built in the Gothic style and remodelled in the Baroque style in 1675. A Baroque bell tower stands next to the church. The Church of St. Giles complex is listed as a cultural monument. Dolánky nad Ohří is also home to a late Baroque rectory. It was built in 1788–1791, when the local church was elevated to parish church status. It therefore adds the transformation of the church’s function to the architectural history.

Another notable historical point of reference is a milestone on the E55 near Dolánky nad Ohří. It marked halfway along the route between Berlin and Vienna. South of Dolánky nad Ohří, on the road to Doksany, stands the dead trunk of the so-called “Martyred Oak.” Both places tell, in different ways, of the area’s historical orientation and traditional commemorative markers.

The Renaissance wayside shrine in Dolánky nad Ohří dates from 1597 and is an exceptionally well-preserved monument from the period before the Battle of White Mountain. The wayside shrine is registered as an immovable cultural monument under registration number 47658/5-2004. The chapel over the spring also has this status; it is registered as an immovable cultural monument under registration number 47659/5-2005. The round chapel over the spring was built at the end of the 18th century in simplified Baroque forms and was last repaired in 2011. The church preserves Gothic origins and the Baroque remodelling of 1675. The wayside shrine dates from the Renaissance, while the rectory and spring chapel date from the late 18th century. The chapel’s repair in 2011 adds a more recent period of preservation to this sequence.

The Ohře and Dolní Poohří Nature Park

Dolánky nad Ohří is shaped not only by its architectural and minor monuments. Along the western municipal boundary, the Ohře river contains the site of community importance CZ0423510 Ohře. In addition, the area of Dolánky nad Ohří extends into Dolní Poohří Nature Park. Swimming in the Ohře complements the historic monuments with an activity on the water. Dolní Poohří Nature Park extends this landscape connection beyond the immediate riverbank and municipal boundary. The river landscape thus forms a different focus from the individual historic monuments.
