Úpohlavy: Hiking, Cycling and Culture in the České středohoří

Úpohlavy is located in the landscape of the České středohoří and combines short excursions with longer hiking and cycling routes. If you would like to plan your stay around different daily itineraries, you will find both a moderately challenging ascent to Košťálov and an easy walk to Lucký mlýn. Házmburk is also located in the vicinity of Úpohlavy, a castle ruin on a 418 m-high volcanic cone.

Hiking around Úpohlavy

Úpohlavy is considered a starting point for walks and hikes. A route of approximately 4–5 km leads from Úpohlavy to Házmburk and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. From there, views open up over the České středohoří, the Polabí and the Poohří. The ascent to Košťálov is approximately 6 km long and is considered moderately challenging; the final section is steeper. The southern slopes of Košťálov Hill are protected as a natural monument.

The red-marked Zlatá stezka Zemí hradů hiking trail also passes through the southwestern part of Úpohlavy. For a longer loop, the municipality recommends a route of approximately 30 km via Úpohlavy, Házmburk, Třebenice, Košťálov, Chodovlice and Lucký mlýn, returning to Úpohlavy. The different route lengths make it easier for you to choose between a short excursion and an extended day trip.

Cycle paths and regional routes

Several designated connections also make Úpohlavy interesting when researching a cycling trip. The Lovosice–Házmburk–Lovosice cycle route passes through Úpohlavy and is approximately 50 km long and moderately challenging. Cycle route 3118 between Sulejovice and Třebenice also passes through Úpohlavy. In the České granát area, it runs from Lovosice via Sulejovice and Úpohlavy to Třebenice. Cycle paths 3119 and 3118 form a connection on a regional return route via Lkáň, Třebenice, Úpohlavy and Sulejovice to Lovosice.

Landscape and special places

The Úpohlavy quarry is designated as a geotourism attraction, or as a geosite and excursion site. Its significance is connected with paleontological discoveries from the Upper Cretaceous. However, access is only possible with special permission, as the site includes a military area, a quarry and private property. The quarry therefore belongs among the places whose designated significance and actual accessibility should be considered separately.

Another distinctive point is Lucký mlýn between the municipalities of Chodovlice and Úpohlavy. The former water mill preserves technical equipment in its Baroque building, most of which dates from the early 20th century. A route of approximately 2 km leads there from Úpohlavy; the excursion is considered an easy walk.

Cultural monument in the village

Úpohlavy is home to the late Baroque Chapel of the Holy Trinity, an immovable cultural monument of the Czech Republic protected since 1958. Its triangular gable leads directly into a bell tower. The chapel thus complements the landscape destinations with a clearly visible architectural monument in the village. For spatial orientation, there is also a railway stop in the northern part of the municipality.
