Vražkov – History and Trails at Říp

Vražkov combines traces of Bohemian history with trails around Říp and special places in the village and countryside. If you are planning a stay, you will find both notable sites in the village and several routes leading to a mill, educational trails, Ledčice, and the summit of Říp. This allows you to choose whether to focus your days on local history, walking trails, or distinctive landscape features.

Historical Traces in the Village

In the village centre, a Baroque chapel was built in 1763 by J. Kratochvíl and donated to the community. It also serves as a war memorial and contains a plaque with the names and portraits of the local residents who fell in the First World War. A cross dating from 1846 stands on the village square; a bell tower was added beside it in the 1920s. The village scene thus brings together various testimonies to religious tradition and remembrance.

The history of Vražkov goes back even further. Archaeological finds indicate that Vražkov is one of the oldest Slavic-settled communities in Bohemia. In Škodův statek, the cellar contains surviving wall remains of a Gothic fortress. It stood on the site of the present-day building and was completely destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. The surviving structural element connects today’s village view with a vanished fortified building.

Trails Through the Surroundings and to Říp

From Vražkov, you can hike eastwards along the shooting range and the Čepel stream to Průšův mlýn. In the direction of Mnetěš, a walking trail leads to the Mnetěšská alej educational trail; this continues to Ledčice and HistoryPark Ledčice.

A yellow-marked KČT hiking trail leads to Říp from Vražkov over a rocky slope and past the Pražská vyhlídka viewpoint to the summit. At the foot of Říp, a red-marked circular trail with an educational trail also branches off and runs around the mountain. The two routes described therefore lead either to the summit or on a circuit around the mountain, allowing you to choose your preferred focus.

Special Places in the Countryside

An unusual site is the Hřbitov zvířat in the cadastral area of Vražkov at the foot of Říp, on the road from Vražkov towards Rovné. It has been in operation since 2003. On the steppe slopes of Vínek near Vražkov, evidence of narrow-leaved flax (Linum tenuifolium) dating from 1956 has been documented at an elevation of about 230 metres. This botanical detail complements the historical and cultural destinations with a distinctive feature of the landscape.

When choosing accommodation in Vražkov, you can first decide what you would like to focus on: local history, trails towards Říp, the route via Mnetěš and Ledčice, or the special features of the landscape and village. This way, your search is guided by the experiences you actually want to include, without mixing up the individual destinations.
