Štětí between the Elbe, Trails and History

Štětí combines the Elbe landscape, trails for walks and cycling tours, opportunities to observe nature, and an engaging urban history. The landscape stretches from the landing stage in the tranquil area of Štětí to the narrow strip of floodplain forest along the Elbe towards Počeplice. Experiences range from an approximately 1.5-hour circular route through the historic centre to events with a long tradition. Families will also find specific discoveries: the first four stations of an educational trail feature interactive games for children and adults.

Circular Routes, Educational Trail and Elbe Cycle Route

The Štětí Information Centre offers tourists and visitors guided tours on three circular routes of different lengths. The “Historic Centre of Štětí” circular route is 2 km long and takes about 1.5 hours. This provides a clearly defined opportunity to learn about the city’s history on a dedicated circular route. The three different lengths provide a clear framework for choosing and planning the available time.

For cycling, a completed section of the Elbe Cycle Route more than 4 kilometres long is significant. It runs through Hněvice, a district of Štětí, and has a branch leading to Hněvice railway station. At Hněvice, the Elbe Cycle Route also reaches the Ústí nad Labem Region. Another trail experience is the educational trail “The Robber Štětka’s Learning Journey”, with 21 information panels. The first four stations feature interactive games for children and adults.

Elbe Landscape and Distinctive Natural Scenery

Along the Elbe towards Počeplice, a narrow strip of floodplain forest with stands of rushes close to the river extends along the bank and is considered particularly rich in birdlife. Špičák offers views of Štětí, the surrounding municipalities and the Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area. In the Bílé stráně area near Štětí, semi-natural dry grasslands and shrub formations occur on calcareous ground. The tranquil area of Štětí also has a landing stage. Floodplain forest, viewpoints and dry grasslands represent distinctly different landscape types.

Church History and Living Traditions

The Church of St Simon and St Jude in Štětí was first documented in 1352. A major flood destroyed it in 1784; it was completely rebuilt in 1785. Its interior is decorated with frescoes by the painter Josef Kramolín. The building thus combines several historical layers with an artistic interior.

Festival culture is also part of the city’s identity. The FEDO Festival dates back to 1969 and was held every two years after 1978. The most recent editions included a parade through Štětí, an afternoon concert on Husovo náměstí and the Sunday afternoon Monstrkoncert concert as part of the programme. Štětská ostrev is an annual historical day featuring an afternoon of folk music in Štětí.
