Slatina Pod Hazmburkem – Village Center, Házmburk and Nature

Slatina Pod Hazmburkem combines an exceptional historic village center with the landscape at the foot of the Házmburk castle ruins. A circular village with a long history

The historic village center of Slatina was declared a protected heritage zone in 1995 because of its 32 original buildings. These include barns, enclosure walls and gates that are typical of a Czech circular village. The original stone houses stand in a flattened circle and form a circular village square. The first written mentions of Slatina date back to 1056.

One of the defining buildings is an originally Gothic church that has stood in Slatina since the end of the 12th century. Following a reconstruction in 1746, it was rededicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. The Renaissance tower was built in 1595. On its ground floor there is a stone portal with an inscription about the Renaissance expansion of the church. This makes it possible to discover the village center not only as a coherent ensemble, but also through its individual construction phases. The sequence of construction phases makes the village center particularly multilayered: the medieval origins of the church, the Renaissance tower and the reconstruction with its new dedication belong to different periods, yet remain connected in a single building. The stone portal also draws attention to the historical development without the village square losing its cohesive character.

Házmburk and historic routes

Slatina lies at the eastern foot of the Házmburk castle ruins, between the floodplains of the Podsedický stream and the Rosovka. Historically, the village stood on an important road between Litoměřice and Libochovice, known as the Slatina Road. In the nearby surroundings, Házmburk Castle offers a self-guided tour of the exterior areas of the castle. The castle hill provides views of the České středohoří and the Central Bohemian Uplands. Its location at the eastern foot also places the village between waterways and the castle hill. The tour of the exterior areas and the views of two landscape regions combine historical orientation with a broad view over the surrounding area.

Protected landscape at Vrch Hazmburk

The Vrch Hazmburk natural monument also includes areas in Slatina. Within the protected area, steppe and forest-steppe habitats as well as extensively managed orchards cover approximately 60 percent of the area. Around the castle there are exposed basalt outcrops and scree slopes. The protected area associated with Slatina pod Hazmburkem also preserves species of European importance, such as the grasshopper Stenobothrus eurasius and the Jersey tiger moth Euplagia quadripunctaria.

Village center, castle and protected landscape

During the documented period from 2015 to 2020, Slatina had a railway connection on the Lovosice–Libochovice line, as well as bus connections via Libochovice, Čížkovice, Lovosice, Brozany, Bohušovice and Litoměřice.
